sub 4 ERA? That’s like saying a batter hit above .250.
median team ERA during that period was a touch above 4, so that was a reliable no worse than average performance. Ion top of that, there were 2 or 3 years substantially better than that when he was in the league leaders. I would love that out of Corbin. Right now, it sure doesn't look like he's clearing the Gio bar.

Quote
Ryan Zimmerman when asked about Patrick Corbin's struggles this year: “I think a lot of people forget he was, for lack of better words, abused in 2019 in the playoff run. He did things that he’s never done before for us to win that World Series."

Maybe Zim is just standing up for his teammate. Thats probably what it is.

But I'm also wondering if Corbin has a lingering injury issue and has put off fixing it

WTF! That was 21 months ago! He's had the equivalent of 1 season of work since then. He had 3 short starts that October and had days off when he came out of the bullpen. Zimmerman sounds like FP. :smh:

The absolute worst signing in Nats history. Screw the apologists who refer to his 3 inning outing in game 7. How many games did he lose in the past three years?

He was brought in to help win a World Series. I can say with absolute certainty that the Nats would not have won without him. How much is that worth? Ask the Yankees, or the Dodgers or the early 2000s Tigers.

And the worst signing is going to be Strasburg’s extension.

If he had said this about Sean Doolittle, this would have made much more sense.

My hope was that his worst case scenario is John Lannan: left handed inning eater.

It appears that hope was wildly over hyped.

Just say he got the vaccine and that did it.

Doolittle was a 32 year old reliever who had one pitch. He was living on borrowed time already.

True. But his usage pattern in 2019 certainly didn’t help him.

What's been shocking about his past 2 starts is just how quickly it falls apart for him. That, and the 2 out trouble. He's looked good until the 3 batter explosions.

Yep. I wonder how much of it is simply conditioning. He struggles in the first inning, and then seems fine until about 70 pitches

It’s not condition.   Corbin is easily the best athlete at pitcher in the league.   It’s mental

Go back and watch Corbin's game 4 against the Cardinals. As long as batters swing at the slider spinning into the dirt, he is over-powering. His 94-95 mph fastball has to be accurate enough to make the slider work. When batters stop swinging at the diving slider or he starts missing with the fastball, he collapses. Maybe that's mental  -- he certainly never recovers.

The Nats are stuck with Corbin for a couple more years.

Davey has to let Corbin start and pull Corbin just when he slips. Right now, that has been after five or six innings. That's probably good enough to win half Corbin's starts, although it's tough on the bullpen. Good to have relievers like Klobo, who can go two innings.

It seems closer to 5 than to 6 for Corbin. If the idea was to win games, sure, pull him. My concern is how to manage having a few guys on staff that can only go 5 innings right now. That is basically Four guys who can't pitch more than 5 innings right now. Espino, Fedde, and Corbin are all 5 inning guys right now. Gray is on an innings limit methinks. That leaves you with one guy who can go longer than 5 in Joe Ross. That taxes the guys in the pen a ton. I don't want to blow out Klobosits because he got overworked pitching multiple innings multiple times a week.

His overall conditioning is obviously good - he's a good athlete, like you said - but that doesn't necessarily mean much for an arm with wear and tear as his.  Dude has over 1,000 innings on a post-Tommy John arm - for comparison, Strasburg has about 1,400 and Jordan Zimmermann had almost exactly 1,000 when he left for Detroit and turned into what Corbin is now.  Some guys last much longer, of course, but many don't.

Wind sprints and lifting don't fix a 30-something arm that might be giving out.

We saw in Game 4, Cardinals, that CForbin collapses when a team stops swinging at his slider. He was rolling, he had a big lead, and as long as the Cards kept swinging at sliders in the dirt, he was unhittable. Once they stopped, Corbin was finished. Unless he develops another pitch, or two, then it will be the same over and over. Maybe a cutter.

Makes sense. At this point! he has one effective pitch, the slider.

Nice way to skip reading. Corbin throws a 93-94 mph fastball and an unhittable slider that dives into the dirt. When hitters ignore the slider, he walks guys, he gets into bad counts, he gets clobbered. That's not really two pitches. Corbin can throw one pit for strikes and another wide and in the dirt. How does that work?

And you believe, heart of hearts, that some anonymous left-hander was "the greatest" with only two pitches? Was one of them useless when hitters quit swinging at it? Greatest? So you've never heard of Warren Spahn? Read this:

Who are you thinking, Koufax?  Both he and Carlton were pretty much two-pitch pitchers, at least at their best.

Its Randy Johnson and its not even a close comparison
