When you're talking a 10 year contract it's not just Rendon that's a concern. You gotta believe Turners not going to forget how to play. Soto's contract will be well within that window. If Robles pans out he'll need to be signed within that window. Doolittle will want some money. Scherzer will be gone. Stras will be gone. You'll need to find pitchers. When you tie up that much for that long you need to look way down the road.

You’re not going to break the bank for a light hitting short stop whose game depends on speed and defense same goes for aging closers

Despite reports the #Nats offered Bryce Harper "much more" than the initial 10-year, $300 million deal, @BNightengale insists Washington never did so: "I'm not even sure (the Nats) have an offer on the table anymore."

I wonder if potentially having to face the Nats' pitching staff factors into Harper's decision.

Assume Bob is right and they never made an offer after the one we know off and they won’t offer more than 25 million a year...

What was the owner meeting Harper Christmas Eve for? To suggest signing for less than the previous offer?

Perhaps Bob is right with a number of things he’s said. It still contradicts Lerner meeting with Harper less than a month ago.

College seems like a big mistake for elite players

That’s why most elite players don’t go...

FWIW, the "more than $300 million" report came from Bowden.

Of course its entirely possible that Bowden was wrong.

But as I said Bob seems to not be in the loop with the Christmas Eve meeting.

Personally, I am hoping Bob is right. I like this current roster and am excited to have 4 OF named Soto, Eaton, Robles, and MAT.

Does it? Ted Senior is not a doddling old man. He could have listened for five hours and said "well, our best offer is on the table. Maybe you can get Scott to kick in some of his cut." :)

I think the Phillies prefer Machado as reports have indicated.  It's them or the White Sox for Machado.  The Phillies have reportedly offered Machado, but not Harper as of yet.  I think they are leaking reports about being heavily favored to land Harper to pressure Machado into taking their offer.

Definitely, the seven years of team control stinks even more if you start at 22-23.

Another interesting thing people may not know is that agents don't get paid aside from your signing bonus until after your arbitration years.  They don't get anything through your minor league years or first 3 years of MLB service.

But it is still within a month ago. Contradicting Bob. Who knows...

However the Phillies must have promised something big to be considered “front runners” ahead of team(s) that actually offered contracts.

I don't think Nightengale implied that Senior's meeting didn't happen. I thought he even mentioned it in passing.

Interesting that the only confirmed offer to Bryce is our 10/$300 million proposal.

Yup. They're all talking about how much they love Bryce and were impressed by him (lmfao). Wouldn't surprise me to learn that they've hitting their breaking point and want Machado to make a move.

All media conjecture at this point is agenda-driven.

So looking back over Nightengal's article...

It makes mention of Lerner meeting with Bryce Dec 22nd. At the same time, he writes that the Nationals haven't "engaged" with Harper in nearly a month.

So nearly a month I guess could be 19-20 days if you want to make it so.

Here is Bob's math.
1. The only teams in on Harper are Nationals, Phillies, White Sox, Dodgers, Cubs.
2. White Sox won't give Harper desired years.
3. Dodgers won't give Harper desired Years
4. Cubs can't make the deal right now
5. Nationals won't go beyond $25 Million a year

1+2+3+4+5= Phillies

I want Bob to be right, I really do. But I don't think he is. Whether Harper does sign with Phillies, I don't think Bob's information on this is correct.

I think no doubt the Phils prefer Machado.  They are turning the heat up on him with the Harper talk sending the message...do you really want to go rebuild with the White Sox or come here and contend?  If Machado doesn't sign with the Phils, then I think they absolutely go nuts and make a formal huge offer for Harper.

redoing RZ's contract and trading Eaton would help them avoid the mess.

No it wont. At most, you're talking 10 million in "savings."
Harper is gonna cost 30 million against the tax.

They'd be better off hitting 90% in 2019, then letting Zimmerman and Rendon walk to get back under for 2020.

Under the current rules a sharp accountant could max out the money going to the players and minimize the penalty money by signing guys to two and five year contracts so that payroll spikes for two years then drops every third year.

Eaton is at $8.5 million, Zimmerman is at $16.7 million and a $2 million buyout in 2020 IIRC, so if you negotiate Zimmerman to say 3/$30 million, and trade Eaton, that's over $15 million in savings in 2019 alone.

Why would Zimmerman take less money than hes going to make now?

Oh yeah. I think we are 8 Million currently under the tax...

I get rid of Howie, MAT, and Eaton, plus the 8 gives me almost 24 million.

For 2020 assuming you want to let Zimm walk add another 16 to that 24 sitting at $40. Plus the 9 from Dozier...

It can be done for sure. But is it smart to do...
