Ted doesn't care about spending money, great to hear, just wish he decided that in 2006.

We could have bought more rings than the Marlins.

This team will never get out of the NLDS with Harper on the roster

Unlike the other big 4 professional sports league, its actually really hard to get into the playoffs period. So while Bryce's playoff numbers aren't anything to write home about, as long as he helps you to actually get there, I think its a good idea to retain him if the Lerners are willing to spend.

Is Harper "worth" 35 mill a year or whatever strictly in baseball terms?  It's hard to say any single player is, but he's a very good player that is 26 and very well should just now be at the start of his prime years.  He is, however, worth the money to Lerner when you factor in what he brings to your franchise off the field.  And it's his money, so who cares how he spends it?  Fans don't get to substitute 35 million worth of players to substitute for Harper that they feel will make for a better team.

If we don't sign Harper, what do fans think we're going to do with the extra money?  No evidence from the past indicates that signing Harper means we can't/won't sign Rendon.  A short-term stop gap 2B and cheap SP/bullpen depth are likely all that is out there with or without Harper for Rizzo to go get.  Are we not better with Harper and whatever we can flip Eaton for than with just Eaton?  The answer is obviously yes.

IF we do bring Harper back, I know I'll be thrilled.

It's crazy to take a small postseason sample size, 1 year in which Harper was injured and rusty, to declare Harper can't be part of team success in the postseason.  Did Harper blow that 6 run lead to the Cardinals?  Harper was about the only guy who did hit against SF.  If his teammates could buy a hit, then the Nats advance.

Anybody who knows anything about baseball knows how small sample sizes are almost useless.

or, he could have the same amount of pressure. :)

No, pressure equilibrium is practically unattainable.  :mg:

What if that sample size in relation to a specific player is all you have?    How does one determine if it's a large or small sample size?     :)

Dan Federico:  “Harper has always wanted the Yankees, but without moving Stanton, I don’t think New York budges there. Jayson Werth has a big part in Harper not liking Philly.”

If Harper does stay, it might not be easy to "flip" Eaton because other teams know he'd be excess baggage here.  He's got market value, but probably not as much as we want.  Eaton's starting to be perceived as injury prone...

...the upside hopefully is many years of additional revenue being generated.  And, if the Lerners put that revenue all back into the business, then it can be a good long term investment.  I just hope they don't go over $330mm for 10.

Honestly, I dont think so. It's highly likely that whatever deal brings him back here will have an opt out. Likely an early one. They could roll another year with Harper in CF. Between him and Eaton's injury histories,  Robles will be playing everyday by June

There is no way Harper will be playing center with all the talk of how we want to be a better defensive team.

I gotta believe that if they bring him back it's to replace Zimm at 1B eventually. It's the only thing that makes sense.
