Didn’t they spend five hours with Harper before Christmas?

Yep a month ago. As reported. ;)

Or offer him 30 million per year.

FWIW Nightengale's source about Nats news is almost always Mike Rizzo.

I'd love to see the Phillips tie up 350mil in one player

Better yet 600+ million in two players, both head cases.

Philadelphia Phillies emerge as clear-cut favorite to land Bryce Harper after meeting

Worth noting but not sure I trust Nightengale.  He is trying to stick with his early offseason prediction.  I'll wait till a more creditable reporter comes out with a report.

Could be. Still, kinda hard to buy the bit about clear-cut favorites when the article notes: "The Phillies’ contingent made a long presentation to Harper’s camp, though they reportedly haven’t issued him an offer yet."

So with no offer, they're clear-cut favorites? More smoke, more mirrors. Wake me when the dinner theatre is over.

Sure, there's a good chance it turns into a bad contract.   But if he has some great years and Phillies are finishing ahead of us, that is going to really suck.

I think that is based on the item about the Nats lowering their offer, from $30 to $25 AAV. If this report is to be believed the bidding is going backwards.

It would satisfying to see the Phillies spend that "stupid money" on Harper.  But don't count on it.

If I were Harper, I'd want to stay in D.C. rather than go to Philadelphia, even for a few less million.

Once again -- No opt-outs in a front-loaded contract!!!

The dude is 25 years old and had statistically one of the best seasons in the past 100 years. That wasn't some fluke.

One.  ONE season.

So now the Nats front office are saying they're a long shot to sign Harper. I don't see how they could possibly sign Harper to a 10 year contract. If Soto keeps the way he did as a rookie, they sign Rendon to a long term, keep Turner, not to mention Robles during that 10 year window they wouldn't have any money for pitchers.

Four more years of team control on Turner, the jury is out on how much he'll be worth beyond that. Rendon is the guy to extend.

Would be hard to believe the Dodgers would not try to make an offer given the salary they unloaded and the fact that they're, well, the Dodgers. Magic loves star power and Bryce/Hollywood would be a fit and of course he's closer to Vegas.

If the Phils give him a guaranteed 10 yrs/$350m+ or something and he takes it, I'll be glad the Nats didn't try to compete with that. Can't tie up that kind of money in one player for a decade no matter how good he is. Rizzo has had a great offseason so far plus Rendon still needs to be locked up long term.

Also have to keep in mind Nightengale has been known to be wrong a time or 25.

31+ AAV

Honestly,  I dont think you can get Rendon for less than 23 million AAV

Machado is a free agent heading into his age 26 season. Rendon will be heading into his age 30 season. Big difference in AAV assuming they both want long term deals.

From Jeff Passan

"The Phillies, as anticipated, could serve as the fulcrum for where two of the most talented free agents in a generation wind up, according to sources. Although a USA Today report deemed Philadelphia a "clear-cut favorite" to sign Harper, the Washington Nationals remain a possible landing spot for the 26-year-old outfielder, according to sources."

Definitely, the seven years of team control stinks even more if you start at 22-23.

When you're talking a 10 year contract it's not just Rendon that's a concern. You gotta believe Turners not going to forget how to play. Soto's contract will be well within that window. If Robles pans out he'll need to be signed within that window. Doolittle will want some money. Scherzer will be gone. Stras will be gone. You'll need to find pitchers. When you tie up that much for that long you need to look way down the road.
