The dude is 25 years old and had statistically one of the best seasons in the past 100 years. That wasn't some fluke.

26 :)

he projects to be around a 4 offensive WAR player over the next few years.  Fangraphs has a WAR valued at around $10 million, so $30 million a year or so doesn't seem to be out of line with his value. at least on offense.  The gamble is that his 2018 -3.2 dWAR is an outlier (previous years he was around a 0 dWAR player).

Shift him back into RF, have Robles in CF, and his dWAR should improve.  So its $30-35 million a year for 4 wins versus Adam Eaton at $10 million.  Eaton was a 1.8 WAR player in 2018, 0.9 in 17, and around a 4.5 WAR player from 2014-2016.

2012, 2015, and 2017

Murph, Rendon, Turner, Ramos, ESPINOSA, Max, Roark, Stras, Ross, and Treinen were better in 2016, he was tied with Kelley for 11th best on the team.  Max, Gio, Stras, and Rendon all had higher WAR in 2017, he was fifth best. Max, Roark, Stras, Doo, HELL, GIO, Rendon, Turner, and Soto were better in 2018, he was tied with Zim, Grace, and Holland for tenth best.

So we are going to pay LaBron James money to a guy who hasn't been in the top four on his own team over the past three seasons. I get that 2015 he was the best player in baseball, but that is getting to be a long time ago. (Plus he has a crap attitude.)

How do you know? That’s the definition of outlier. Something that’s rare and outside the normal range. Has he even had a season half as good as 2015?

-Six All Star berths
-Rookie of the Year
-2015 MVP
-10 players since 1901 have been regular players for seven full seasons at the age of 25
https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/washington-nationals/bryce-harper-named-nl-mvp-after-historic-season%3famp

It's been truly amazing what Harper has done at the age of 25.

All Star is a popularity contest.

Everything else is amazing because of his age, with the exception of 2015.

The dude is 25 years old and had statistically one of the best seasons in the past 100 years. That wasn't some fluke.

Uh, that is definitely a fluke. He hasnt repeated it.Hes a .280 hitter with ~30 home run potential, a really good OBP, below average defense, and average base running.

Is he a good player? Yes. But he wants to get paid like a perennial MVP candidate.

2017 until he got injured. But that goes to the biggest issue with paying big time money. He never seems to stay healthy.

If Zim is still productive "when healthy" which he still is, I have no issue keeping him around a few more years.
"A few more years" might be an exaggeration.  The bottom line is that the Nats could basically name the price after 2019.  He's not going anywhere.  Overall he's an adequate first baseman (great receiver, can't throw. below average range).  And he would complement Harper...

...so disappointing -- this guy's got a GREAT arm, which of course would be largely wasted at first base.  Yesterday MLB showed Harper's 2018 outfield "highlight" reel.  It was hilarious and great entertainment!   They were trying to make a point -- they didn't mention that he does make routine plays.  It's not  a total loss when he plays right field.

Regarding 2015 -- let's not rewrite history.  He was out of this world until mid-August.  His productivity dropped precipitously just when he was needed most.

Rumor now is that Harper isn't getting the offers he wants so he's going to do a year of service.

Next years free agent class at this point is very strong. He's not signing for 1 year.

What team would do that?    I hope not the Nats.

Huh, what the hell does that mean?  He went 9/33 on a 10 game west coast road trip with a home run and a couple of doubles and that "slump" cost the Nats their season.   Nevermind that he hit .341 in September with 10 HR and a 1.244 OPS when I guess it didn't matter?  The mental gymnastics people go through to discredit his production as non-clutch is so over the top sometimes.

I don’t believe in clutch and non clutch and I think 2015 Harper was amazing. But it’s looking more and more like it was an outlier and not what you can expect from him going forward. You can try to come up with reasons why he might get back to that level, but it’s guesswork.

I know I’m getting 8 wins from Trout. I might get that from Harper, but there is an equal chance I get 3.

Man. It seems like teams learned to call Boras' bluffs last year, and sticking with it this year. I like it.

however, according to Dan Federico of Bleacher Report, former Nats teammate Jayson Werth “has a big part in Harper not liking Philly.”

jayson werth coming through in the clutch even in retirement.

The main reason for the 2015 failure to reach the post season was bullpen collapse from mid-July thru August.  The Nats were already toast by September.  Harper's overall numbers were unbelievable, but he often failed in high leverage situations.

If I was a 21-year-old rookie making 400k I'd still choose NYC or LA or any major city. Financially it's not as prudent as living in Pittsburgh or Tampa or Minneapolis but you can only be young and rich once.

One time I ended up out with an NYY pitcher who was in his late 20s and for a random night out he paid for a bar tab for like 15 people and then bought out 2 bowling alley lanes (?!) at a fancy bowling alley and paid for all the drinks and food, plus he had a driver. That kind of belligerent stupidity can only happen when you make half a million dollars a year before you're 25.

I'd love to have made 400k when I lived in NYC. That kind of money would have been an incredible life there.

If you're making minimum wage in 2019 you're making $545k.

Damn, I stand corrected.    :-[

I googled 2019, and got a headline with  $545k back without clicking the article.  Very sloppy research.

Will either Harper or Machado get anywhere near what they were expecting? Hope the Lerners don't end up overpaying if Bryce wants back, i.e., drop that original offer.

MLB minimum.   If you can quit your job and be a backup outfielder for the A's, I'd do it too, although 555k in the Bay Area is...well, not what 555k is elsewhere.  Might want to play for the Rays.

If I was making league minimum I’d live in one of those states with no income tax. I’d just fly to a different party city every other weekend.
