Why would Zimmerman take less money than hes going to make now?

Because 1) he knows he will not get $10 million for 2020 and 2021. 2) he doesn’t want to play anywhere other than DC.

3 years/ 30 million is not less than what he’s making now. Which for all intents and purposes is 3 years/$20 million.

Eaton is at $8.5 million, Zimmerman is at $16.7 million and a $2 million buyout in 2020 IIRC, so if you negotiate Zimmerman to say 3/$30 million, and trade Eaton, that's over $15 million in savings in 2019 alone.

Extending Zimmerman is such a bad idea. For a little bit of AAV savings in 2019 we get stuck with big hits in 2020 and 2021. Worse than than the cap impact we end up with Zimmerman taking up a roster spot for two more years. While his bat is fine he should never again play defense, he can't throw, has very limited range, and is injury prone.

Baseball reference rates Eaton higher than Harper over the past three years, even with all of the injuries, why would we want Bryce at five times the price?

Hes got an 18 million dollar option. They arent going to decline it and buy him out unless he doesnt want to play.

I know he has a special place emotionally.   Business wise, I'm with you.

Zimmerman himself intimated that he knows it’s unlilkely they pick up that option and he’s not going anywhere.

Quote
So when asked about his contract, which is guaranteed through the 2019 season and contains a team option for $18 million for 2020, Zimmerman did not speak like a man hunting leverage.

“The thought of having any problems coming to an agreement moving forward, you know, I don’t really see that happening. I still would like to get compensated fairly, but it’s not like I am going to go somewhere else and play for an extra couple bucks,” Zimmerman said. “I don’t think it’s any secret I’d like to finish here. I’m really optimistic about what will happen, and it goes back to me just staying healthy and playing to begin with. It’s on me. If I want to continue playing, I have to prove that I am worth it to keep investing.”

You’re not going to break the bank for a light hitting short stop whose game depends on speed and defense same goes for aging closers

The fastest player in the league who plays shortstop, hit 19 home runs with 73 RBIs .271 average with a 4.1 WAR costs plenty. Doolittle or any closer costs more than they're paying now. One of the best rookie years ever will cost plenty within 10 years. The point is when you're talking 10 years you can't just worry about this year and next. That's why 10 year contracts are few and far between and most teams don't give them.

My thoughts on the December meeting with the old man was that it was, at worst a face-saving opportunity for Boras, and at best a smoke screen to make other clubs think the Nats were still in the game.

The is no chance Royce is back here next year...IMHO, of course...

I just hope he doesn't go to the Phillies or any other NL East team because if he does do well, it would sting more.

Under the current rules a sharp accountant could max out the money going to the players and minimize the penalty money by signing guys to two and five year contracts so that payroll spikes for two years then drops every third year.
no,it's based on AAV, not yearly pay.

no,it's based on AAV, not yearly pay.

I'm not sure of the exact formula to max out spending with minimal penalty but the concept is:

2019 stay just under the cap
2020 sign 2 & 5 year contracts, go $20 over & pay 20%
2021 go $20 over & pay 30%
2022 2 year contracts expire, stay under the cap
2023 sign 2 & 5 year contracts

The big flaw is that the next CBA could change the rules. The other flaw is that this is a lot of work just to save a million per year in penalties.

I think the Lerners will happily eat any penalties when signing Harper. As a matter of fact I think they'd spend (except on coaches  :D) up to the point of not making money as long as they weren't running a negative to get stars and win.

But will they give him the yearly salary he wants?

Pretty much this. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lerners would meet the terms originally offered, but I don't think they're going over that amount. As far as we know, it's the best offer he's gotten. He'd probably be a pretty good 1B.

Why would the Nats pay $30M a year for 10 years if the best offer he has is well short of that -- in years and dollars? Lerners weren't born yesterday.

philly fans believe they're on the verge of signing one or maybe TWO superstars.  old man lerner, who has freak you money, should whisk harper away from them.  if you can't do things out of spite to people you dislike then why even get rich?

we can break philadelphia's collective soul here, folks.  do the right thing, old man.

I hope they give Harper $35 million a year for 10 years and Machado the same deal.

New PhillyBall is spending $60 million a year on two players!

2 players that fit the profile of what the usually salivating Yankees and Dodgers go after. If they have some reservations to commit, that speaks volumes because money isn’t an issue with those 2 organizations.

Do it Philly! Sign 2 guys long term to $60M per year!! Then boo Harper when he whiffs in a key at bat and throw batteries at Machado when he doesn’t run out a ground ball ;)

If the Nats sign Harper and extend Rendon they will be spending about 55 million a year on two guys. The luxury tax threshold will be $210 million in 2021 and who knows after that.

I think the luxury tax structure will be very different with the next CBA, or it won't really matter what dollar amounts are in the contracts, because there will be a work stoppage.

I don't think there's any way the Phillies would sign both because they want to go big time after Eagles fan Trout when he becomes a free agent in 2021. I would not like to see Trout in a Phillies uniform.
