Just sign already. It’s ok to admit that teams don’t see you as worth as much as you think you are.

This applies to Machado too. Big hit to the ego that no one is offering 400M.
What if no one is offering $250M? What are they gonna do, sit out?

I've always said that there's a good chance they do something like 3/$105 million with opt outs every year so he can cash in on his next MVP-level season.

That, I could live with. We need a 1B soon.

Sign late in February for the biggest offer. Maybe it’s like 200/8   :D

I can sort of see him doing something like that with the Dodgers or Yankees.  But purely financially speaking, it seems awfully tough to leave 200 million on the table if things don't go well.   The chances of getting 350 million down the road even with some mvp seasons seems pretty unlikely as years pass by.

Who are the "mystery teams" in the hunt for Harper and Machado? The teams on top dropped the most payroll (according to COTS #s) since last year and have tons of cap space. They are either tanking or waiting on the market to bottom out.

How would THAT make you feel, knowing you turned down 300/10 just months earlier?

Texas?  I've always thought they were a wild card.  It's going to come down to, does he want to play for the highest bidder to save face (Philly, CWS or mystery team), or does he sign where he actually wants to be (here or LA).

Ask Ian Desmond. Smaller stakes, but same situation.

Stakes were kind of higher for Desmond.  I think I could live with turning down 300 million and settling for 200 million.   Turning down 107 million and settling for 8 would be much tougher to get over.

However, in the end, Desmond did get paid.

He’s not going to get only 200 million for 10 years so those numbers aren’t comparable anyway. At most he will be getting a couple million less per year.

It's not impossible that a 6 year/200 million contract would be the last lucrative contract Harper signs.  Taking a short term contract does have the potential to leave a lot of money on the table.

That would be over $30 million per year. He would be 31/32 then and likely to get another good contract. Have said it several times. Owners aren’t giving 10 year contracts with opt outs.

As a 31/32 year old outfielder who likely will be a part-time or full-time 1B at that point he is not getting a good contract. Look at the current market. Over-30 OFs are treated like they have leprosy.

This is his only chance to truly, fully, cash-in IMO. (Barring an opt-out in like a year or two after an MVP season)

I tend to agree with you.  13 seasons could be a lot of miles on a big guy like him.  Mostly depends on how the next 6 years go though.  I think it's equally likely that he's an MVP finalist most of those years, as it is that he never hits over .240 a year or plays over 100 games/year.

Wat

JD Martinez got 110 million at 31 to basically be a DH

Lorenzo Cain got 80 million at 32.

Minnesota is spending, but that is the one that could be a complete mystery who may still have room and is a marginal contender for both the division and the wild card due to the division they play in. Cleveland, too, could use Harper and has room, but they are pretty deliberately pulling back.  The Arizona CF is the one they should chase.

Harper isn’t hitting like Martinez now, at 26. What will he be like in 5 years?

Martinez was worthless at 26.  And who is counting on Harper to play CF?  He's a corner OF that may transition to 1B.

Nobody is counting on him to play CF. That’s my point. I’m saying you get a lot more money to play CF than you do to play 1B or corner outfield.

Martinez is a crappy OFer. Now and at 26. Hes a DH.

Martinez had one 5 WAR season to his credit and a couple of sub 4War seasons to his credit, prior to signing that deal.

Harper is perfectly capable of having a far better season at 31 than Martinez.  He is also very capable of having a much worse season.

And that's kind of the point.  Harper making a bet that he can get that 100 million he left on the table or more down the road is a foolish bet that could end up quite costly from a purely financial perspective.

You think in 5 years teams will be knocking down the door to give Harper, likely a 31-year-old DH/1B who has only proven to be inconsistent from month to month and season to season, a contract close to what he is getting today? I don't see it. Maybe I'll be surprised and he'll get $400 million this week but I'm assuming he gets around 10/$350 with an opt-out or two but IMO this is his big chance to cash in.

At 31 Harper is who he is. At 26 Harper can still be a perennial MVP candidate and that is what teams are paying for.
