We don’t all have $300m+ There is nothing around here comparable to a nice Malibu mansion, but that’s irrelevant on my salary

The recent fires might make one reconsider the benefits of living in Malibu. :)

If you're a star, you don't have to play for LA or NY or Chicago.  LeBron was plenty marketable for years in Cleveland.  Harper is going to be filthy rich and is already as marketable as he could ever hope to be.  It will be about lfiestyle and where he wants to live combined with the right baseball fit.

In what ways is dc better than LA?

Our seasons aren't fire, flood, mudslide, and  earthquake.  Our air is better.  And we're closer to the rest of the East Coast.

LeBron was in the finals every year- Harper has never been to the NLCS

Why do you think it does- is the potomac comparable to the Pacific, are you a fan of humidity?

One of my best friends lives in LA and repeatedly has tried to get me to move out there. My Response has always been "too much traffic, too many douchbags," I can't credibly cite that as a response since I've moved here.

If you have unlimited funds, LA is superior to DC. Weather, Ocean Proximity, Food, Entertainment Options, etc, etc.
Not everyone is going to prefer LA and it doesn't mean I don't like living here, but If I won the lottery, A house in Santa Monica, or Malibu would definitely be high on the wish list. There is nowhere like that in this area.

I'm not going to compare cities because that's very subjective (there's a whole other thread for that and I have no idea what's important to him) but here he can be a legend, which I assume is important to him but who knows.

Harper is a bigger star than anyone on the Red Sox or Dodgers or Astros or Yankees. He has maxed out his star potential as a baseball player. It doesn't matter where he plays. He is in a low ceiling sport, popularity-wise.

FWIW, top endorsement earners in the big four sports (as of 2016):

1. LeBron
2. Durant
3. Kobe
4. Harden
5. Peyton Manning
6. Derrick Rose
7. Steph Curry
8. Drew Brees
9. Dwayne Wade
10. Cam Newton

Among baseball players:
1. David Ortiz
2. Buster Posey
3. Robinson Cano
4. Miguel Cabrera
5. Albert Pujols

So if Harper really wants to make big bucks as a celebrity, he needs to play in the NBA or NFL rather than focus on living in LA or NYC (or take up Golf)

None of the top five baseball players are in LA or NYC. But, Cano, really? Can't think of a single national commercial he's in.

is $500 million unlimited funds?

LA sucks if you're broke or middle class but if you have the money it can be really sweet. same as NYC

Yep, likewise, if I’m making league minimum, I’d rather be anywhere but LA or NYC (or SF too)

I mean, for my purposes $500 million may as well be unlimited funds, even in LA. Maybe not for Bryce Harper, though.

If I was a 21-year-old rookie making 400k I'd still choose NYC or LA or any major city. Financially it's not as prudent as living in Pittsburgh or Tampa or Minneapolis but you can only be young and rich once.

One time I ended up out with an NYY pitcher who was in his late 20s and for a random night out he paid for a bar tab for like 15 people and then bought out 2 bowling alley lanes (?!) at a fancy bowling alley and paid for all the drinks and food, plus he had a driver. That kind of belligerent stupidity can only happen when you make half a million dollars a year before you're 25.

I'd love to have made 400k when I lived in NYC. That kind of money would have been an incredible life there.

This. But tastes change as you get older. 26 is only 5 years older than 21, but its almost night and day. You can go out  and get slammed in a nice place in any city these days. The only REAL difference is the women, but he just recently got married...

Beach shmeach, theres plenty of time to look at water in the offseason

Maybe the hold-up with Harper coming back is that he wants to hire his dad as manager :stir:

Think about what Harper would value in a city, not what the rest of us might value. And none of us really know.

He might be thinking about the kind of place he wants to raise a family, where he has friends, the place where he would work, etc. So it's complicated.

If it comes down to that, we have no chance. Better pony up and pay him big bucks.

We’ve got no clue what he values. So we substitute things that most people value. Personally, I think he values money.

I think it is pretty clear that he values hair salons.
