A bit surprised Rainey wasn't the first to go.

They are trying to salvage him. Hickey will work with him but to no avail and then send him to Rochester.

I don't believe any of Rainey, MBarnes, or Weems could have been sent down without clearing waivers. MBarnes can refuse an outright assignment at this point, and maybe Weems as well.

In some ways, they are doing MBarnes a solid by seeing if there's any interest by a major league team then giving him an opportunity to pick which team he thinks he could work his way back to the majors with by signing. He's a vet hunting for an opportunity.

so . . . just 2 out and two in today?

Rosario, Meneses survive another day.

Rosario isn't going to be cut after finally having a couple games back to back with hits. They're going to see if this is him turning the corner or a dead cat bounce.

I think Meneses survives only until Joey Gallo is back. Then he better hope they're ready to end the Nunez experiment or it makes it hard to see how he stays on roster.

The thing is, I think the roster is short on functional righty hitting than lefty.

Lefties - Abrams, Garcia (pray he's well), Winker. That's before the reclaim projects, Gallo and Rosario.

Righties - Senzel. Then what? Vargas is the next best, which is damning by faint praise. Adams if he plays. Lip is there but not shocking the world. Better hope for Robles to be like 4/23 or Meneses at least can put balls in play.

Meneses I think has a longer leash, but at some point, an option to AAA (or DFA if the 40 man spot is needed) and adding YEpez to the roster should be tried. I don't think they rush to add back Gallo.

Matt Barnes clears waivers. The transactions page on the team website says he was outrighted to Rochester on 5/8 (https://www.mlb.com/nationals/roster/transactions), but the roster resource page on FG lists him as released on 5/9 (https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/nationals).

I assume he can refuse an outright at this point in his career, so I assume he's a free agent and released.

Matt Barnes did reject the outright and was released.

fwiw, the team is responsible for the balance of his $2 million contract, less pro-rated MLB minimum if he signs with another team. First eaten money on an FA signee this year.

Quote
The Mariners announced that Bryan Woo has been reinstated from the injured list, with fellow righty Tyson Miller designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Miller, 28, signed a minor league deal with the M’s in the offseason and was selected to the big club early in April. He has since thrown 11 2/3 innings over nine appearances with a 3.09 earned run average. He has a 26.7% strikeout rate and 2.2% walk rate. He’s been helped a bit by a .207 batting average on balls in play but his 3.85 FIP and 2.98 SIERA still suggest he’s been pretty good.

Can we grab this guy? He's under team control until 2030

it's as if Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan had his release in mind when NK said, "WHHHYYYY!"  Arethe Mariners that deep in the pen that the guy who impressed in the spring and didn't disappoint is released? I think he's an upgrade on Rainey.

I am close to deleting the post because it is truly the height of shame. Shows you how long its been since I saw it. Once Imref  mentioned the avi, I remembered Elias was the name of the character, but I completely forgot Barnes was the antagonist.

FWIW, the movie that I use more in real life is the Deerhunter. I use it at work to explain my reasoning on some matters

Looks like no moves for tonight's game. Winker has the night off with his back, so Robles is in right, Meneses at 1st and Senzel is DH. :spazz: At least Young is playing.
