roster moves - 2024

Usually let's wait until moves are official. So far, the transaction for Senzel to the IL and Lipscomb to the active roster has not been made. When it is, post it here.

BTW - as good as Lipscomb's spring was, I think the smart move may be to call up Alu instead.

1) Alu is a natural 3rd baseman, too.
2) He has a pretty good minor league hitting record. Better than Lipscomb in the upper minors over more PAs. Even if you think the 2022 power was a fluke, he's still a good contact and walk OBP guy (again, in the minors).
3) There's a benefit to not starting Lipscomb's clock.
4) I'd rather Lipscomb get his reps at 2nd.
5) But for this spring, no one considered Lipscomb ready for the majors.
6) consequence of a fail after call up are less for Alu than Lipscomb (burning option, starting clock).

From what I understand, the plan was for Lipscomb to mostly play 2nd since House is the 3B of the future. That was the justification for sending him down. Lipscomb played mostly 3B in the minors (and won the minor league gold glove award there last year).

With Senzel hurt, Lipscomb is going to be the everyday 3B going forward and will get his chance to shine. We'll see what happens. I

well, as long as he's at Rochester, you could play Kieboom at 3rd and Lipscomb at 2nd if you call up Alu. I suppose Alu will get time at 2nd with Lipscomb up, which is OK.

More or less, I think there are benefits to giving Alu a shot at 3rd before writing him off and pushing Lipscomb perhaps too soon.

It's not like Garcia Jr. Is a good 2B. Lipscomb could be moving between 3B and 2B if he plays well. I expect to see lots of Vargas at 3B.

Didn’t I predict a while back that Senzel would be hurt and then they would call up Kieboom but you said he was not on the forty man roster?

Absolutely no reason to see another day of Vargas

Weems is the most underrated guy on this team.   We need to get rid of Barnes, and then I really like our bullpen

BTW, there is zero reason to play Rosario.   I cannot understand this team.  Jacob Young is way better.   This team would be decent if we did not sign retreads

I do like Weems despite some analytics that say he's been lucky rather than good. He's a bit old, but so is most of the bullpen. I think Davey uses him correctly. At this point, he's 3rd righty and gets medium+ leverage innings. He and Garcia are the 6/7th inning guys with leads. I expected that role to go to Floro, tbh. Barnes at this point I think is being used behind or tied and late. He's no better than 6th arm in the bullpen. I'm fine with that, at least until guys like Brzykcy, Powell, or Schoff are ready or somebody like Henry or Parker is converted to a reliever. I do think they'd benefit from more from Bleier being on the staff than Barnes and thought he deserved it more coming out of the spring, but otherwise, I'm ok with Barnes and Rainey being used in their current roles.

Regarding Rosario, he's an absolutely fine signing. That's not a knock on Young, who brings speed and D, but until Robles was hurt, I don't think this team was short on speed threats. Other than the catchers and maybe Meneses, Davey will be aggressive with everybody. Rosario offers power and average D. Best case for Young now is that there's a 2-3 month window before it would be ridiculous to keep Wood and Crews down, so it would be the best opportunity to gauge what we have with Young in the majors. I don't see him as more than a 4th OF in the long term, so getting reps in AAA is good. It's all moot if Robles is IL'd.

Is Winker more than just "sick"?

EDIT: I see Vic is hurt.

Winker is back today, so the working theory is bad Cincinnati chili, but maybe that's redundant.

It makes sense to call up Jacob Young. Can't have Ildy V. as the backup LF. Call has been tried and found wanting...he doesn't hit. Maybe Rosario plays as much as possible, since he has always been pretty good. Young, and Winker share time.

I think Ian said 13 is a cap on pitchers and you can have 14 players. With an offf day, I think, the 5th slot can be skipped. Corbin on regular rest . 4/21 is the next game they need a 5th, maybe later

apparently Ruiz has been ill the past couple of days, per Zuckerman:

Quote
With no need for a fifth starter again until next week in Los Angeles, the Nats decided to demote Adon, who tossed four innings of one-run ball in place of the injured Josiah Gray. Rather than call up another pitcher, they opted to add Millas, who will catch today’s game with Keibert Ruiz under the weather and Riley Adams sitting after starting Tuesday’s game.

Also, Harvey's right hand looks to be OK after being struck by a line drive on Tuesday.

Millas's stay was just one game. He's been optioned to Rochester. Martinez says it's likely that the team will call up a reliever to help with bullpen overload. Team must call a guy up before the next game.

not on the 40 man, I think. Maybe Willingham, or maybe Willingham gets dropped to make room for LaSorsa.

Amos Willingham recalled. TalkNats say they were planning to bring Rutledge up for a spot start but that won't happen now due to Rutledge's injury (still no word on severity).

Mitchell Parker and Drew Millas are on their way to LA.  I'm guessing Ruiz goes on the IL. Willingham probably heading back to Rochester.
