Because he can't smoke batters.
I don't even know where to begin with this. I think it's likely that you associate "smoking batters" with guys who rely on the high fastball for strikeouts? Obviously that's not Roark's game. However, there's more than one way to pitch, and more than one way to pitch well. He is 76th of 113 in terms of swinging strike %, I guess that's what you mean? However, he's also 6th out of 113 in terms of swing rate within the strike zone - so he gets a lot of strikes looking (I assume based on deception and execution).

he doesn't have great stuff.

Again, he has an above-average fastball that he combines with 3 others pitches that have all been rated as positive pitches (based on results) in both years as a full-time starter. None are as pretty as Kershaw's curveball or Strasburg's changeup, I agree.

Roark's inability to miss bats is what lost him the game. He couldn't smoke Grandal or make him chase a ball out of the zone and fouled off bad strikes off until he got one he liked and destroyed it.  I wouldn't call his fastball above average except on days that his 2 seamer has good life on it which is about once every five games. He did start out with nice runback on it early in the game then around the 6th inning, it started to go back to how it is most of the time. Straight as an arrow and waiting to get blasted into the cheap seats. I like his mental process and the ways he attacks batters, he's a very poor mans greg maddux, but he is far from a legit #3 pitcher. A good 4 or 5 sure.  Roark is a finesse pitcher because he can't simply reach back and blow it by a batter or doesn't have a wipeout slider or any other devastating strikeout pitch. Gio has better stuff than him, but does more with less because Gio is a damn head case.

7 innings of shutout ball, but it was that inability to strike someone out in the 8th that lost him the game? Sure champ, sure.

The #Mets' private workout with Yulieski Gurriel is scheduled for next week.

Why aren't we doing this?

Yes, what we really need is an infielder.

Not true. Over the last two to three int'l signing periods, the team has been active (spending right around the cap amount). This year (supposedly), they are blowing the lid off on the cap. We'll see here in a couple weeks.

I hope in the offseason we do something like Roark and Espi to the White Sox for Quintana and a prospect or a reliever like Nate Jones. That way we can pick Gios option and deal him too.

I was referring to the international free agency with posting fees etc, aka Dodgertown.

This team needs a jolt. It is in free-fall. I am shocked a move hasn't been made yet.

They've signed plenty in the Latin American FA periods. They haven't made an Japanese signings, a la Tanaka, Darvish, Menta, etc... Not sure why they're hesitant

Who they need is Otani. He could pitch and play OF on his off days.

I said the same thing. Plus his contract is not that bad. Also you wouldnt have to give as much as you think to get him because of the year he is having. Like Robles, Lopez and Schrock might be enough

:hysterical: There is no way the Pirates would trade McCutchen unless he asked them to.

So they would be giving up for the next few years also?  Makes no sense. ESPN would like that so they could focus on their favorites: the Cards and the Cubs.

No their top prospect is a CF. And why keep him when they have to pay the piper in a few years. A big market can absorb his next 3 years especially if they get controllable prospects in return. He is not what will determine if they can compete or not.Better to trade him now at 29 then at 31.

Why would we give up anything for a 28 million dollar .243/.320/.423 hitting, -7 DRS fielding CFer

Yeah I dont see them doing it in year. They may do it this offseason. It makes sense to do it after this year definitely.

Prospects don't always pan out. Wouldn't they be better off keeping them both?
