While you are right in principle, people ignore this data and just rant and rave anyway.

Data? MLBtraderumors is "data"?

Pretty much a sucker bet.

Lee to the Yankees.
Crawford to the Yankees/Angels

Nats were 'close' on both.

Lerner: We were willing to spend, nobody can deny us of that!

Rizzo: The fact [insert free agent's name here] was considering us and the fact it came to the wire, means progress and we're heading in the right direction.

Nats Player X: It would have been nice to have had [insert free agent's name here], but we feel confident in the group we have and we're going to battle hard this year.

Jerry Crasnick would have some sources, or you can't count Boswell as data either. Or Ben.

I'm crunched right now.  Will continue the argument later.

tom - my point is a team with 2 SS quality bats in the line up is worse offensively than a team with a typical SS and typical 2d base bat.  Of course, if both ID and DE are in the line up at the same time, i don't think there is much difference which position each plays.

PotCan - I'll look at your numbers later.  Let's realize that some superior offensive 2d basemen probably are not on the qualified list for 2010, like Pedroia and Kinsler (Utley barely does). I'm pretty confident that you can look at SS and 2d offense over the last half decade and the typical SS will be below the typical 2d baseman (roughly from the time A-Rod, miggy, nomar, and jeter bagan to decline or shifted positions).

Your both wrong. It does make a difference.  You cannot afford two SS quality bats at 2d. Go look yourself at the runs created stats on either fangraphs or baseball reference or baseball prospectus (or OPS+ or OPS) and you'll see that the median SS is signifcantly lower than the median 2d baseman.  The glove at 2d does not make up for the run difference.
BTW - sorry for the tone here, but I wanted to brief due to time.

Would you rather have the Hoverboard or the DeLorean?

Hoverboard.  I would revolutionize the X-Games.

Agreed on 2B being better, but getting premier SS type range and the bottom of the top 10 type OPS isn't something to just brush off.  Considering it's not Guzman/Belliard I think we can consider it an upgrade.

It's already been mentioned... but the Cubs don't plan on spending big money this offseason.

ESPN Insider has a story on it, their twitter link is as follows - http://es.pn/nodunnforcubs

So, that's our main rival for his services off the list, no?

Seems right.  I was surprised to see Boston pick up the option on Ortiz.  Thought they could be an outside shot for Dunn.  I really don't think anyone out there will break the bank for him when there are a few solid alternatives and Lee, Crawford, and Werth are considered the big names this offseason.

Still sticking with my idea that we offer arb, he declines and files, and we resign him before our month of negotiating time is over when he sees the market isn't huge.  Pretty solidly in the 85% range on him being our 1B for the next 2-3 years.

Um, there is no more month of negotiating time.

It was cut to five days, and it's about over.

Who's Ben Reiter?  I'll bet he has fewer connections than Bos.

Yeah, we already have Wang, so we don't need Webb.

I've got no problem with it.  It just can't be the one we're counting on to turn things around.  It's gotta be paired with another pitcher.

Reading the article it sounds like 100% speculation on the part of its author.  Every entry is couched in terms of "a good fit" and "could take" and "will likely."  So there's no particular reason to think Webb is likely to come here if you didn't already.  That said, I am concerned about the potential of our signing pitchers like Webb or Vazquez because I'd much rather the club work to get a pitcher who is actually good than pair a mediocre pitcher (Marquis) with a reclamation project (Wang) and hope for the best.

5 days exclusive.  Followed by the original team being allowed to negotiate for another month.  Then the original team cannot sign the player until, I believe, May 1.

Last day to offer arb in Nov. 23.
