It's National Hat Day - so we can expect much talk, from the Nationals organization... ;)

I'd still rather have Santander
where I'm at. It'll be shorter, years which I like except for the elite guys. Sign Santander, and you can deal Young either straight-up for a 3rd baseman for a few years or deal him for prospects that you can deal to a team if they have a CF.

I'm fine with Tena at 3B until House is called up, which ought to be sooner rather than later.

Clubs in the position the Nats were in in 2011 overpay. as the Nats would have to do now to attract a big name FA. That's the reality of being a team that hasn't yet shown it can actually win.
Werth was probably the most sought after free agent that offseason I believe so the overpay was necessary. It was interesting to note that other Free Agents like Marquis actually signed with the Nats because it was evidently clear they were going to take off in a few years based on the drafting of Stras and Harper, and Marquis  said as much when he signed with the team.

Carl Crawford, too. I think Adrian Beltre was an FA coming off his pillow contract in Boston. As they say, one of these things is not like the others.

I believe you will see him all year as House might get a look in September.

The way it is worth is veteran leadership.  I think he helped but you can't quantify it. So some here will dismiss.  Not his fault Drew Storen couldn't get an out.

The Werth signing did provide hope to hungry fans and signal that the team was ready to get serious about building a roster that could win. That symbolic value , along with veteran leadership, are what fans often cite when discussing his value to the team. But did he really lead or provide an example in a way that especially helped the Nats? We can’t know for sure if the example he provided, vs what could have been provided by other vets, was particularly positive. I always wondered whether his sullen A-hole persona might actually have been unhelpful. I’m not saying that signing him was a mistake, just that I think many Nats fans overrate him as a player because of his distinct look and the symbolism associated with his acquisition.

Bennett Lehman at District on Deck reports Andres Chaparro is having a nice season in the Venezuelan winter league.
https://districtondeck.com/nationals-news-former-top-30-prospect-retires-chaparro-raking-in-winter-league-multiple-milb-signings-01jhrss6d0he

Lehman passes on a Nationals Source X-itter report that Chappy has hit 6 homers in the playoffs, setting a team record. Pop is good.

B-R has him at .323 / .392 / .600 over 74 PAs for Aguilas de Zulia this winter, playing 1st base and DH.

I think I'm more interested in seeing Chappy than Yepez.

Cool. But that's basically Low A pitching.

Nats sign Andrew Knizner to a minor league deal with a ST invite. Possible backup catcher.

The dodgers could have five #1 pitchers next year. Not sure what the point is of any other team right now.

ohtani?

Yamamoto was pretty freaking good as well. It will be interesting to see if they go with a six man rotation.

Baseball playoffs are always a crapshoot. They're just as likely to lose against an 85 win WC team as they are to win the WS again.

Yamamoto will be a #1  if he's healthy.

yah, but I thought Minter was going to sign in that range. Crowd source median had been good for the non-elite relief arms. He's getting elite money

Tanner Scott is apparently asking for an $80M contract

Edit: I see imref already posted this in the non-Nats off-season thread.

I mean, that seems pretty much on market value. Especially when you look at his match up history against the top LHH in baseball

It's Josh Hader/Edwin Díaz money, and I guess I just didn't see him as being in the same tier as those two.
