Meh, Torres would have stunk at 3B. It's either overpay for Bregman (not a fan), or go with Tena/Chappy at 3B and invest in a DH. Given what we've seen, probably easy to say we are not in on Alonso or Santander. It's not going to be the offseason to "go in". Might never see that again until ownership changes.
Teoscar is still out there, too. 3 major bats. About the only thing you can hope for is there will be an announcement of one of these "run silent, run deep" move for a major bat that's not being rumored.

I don't want any part of JurPro at this point. Maybe you go really old for JD Martinez or Justin Turner. Those two would not be break the bank moves. Winker could be limited to the strong side of a DH platoon as sort of a poor man's Pederson.

Tena at 3B?  All season long?  This team could be even worse defensively than it was last year

I wish Nunez got some reps at 3rd last year. I think he's the bench glove this year absent some sort of Polanco or DeJong signing. We will also see how tough in the field Chappy is at 3rd. Other than that, it's wait for a minor leaguer to develop.

Anyone know whether Tena is playing winter ball?

When my daughter was 6, the kid who didn’t want to play, but almost played a couple of times got a trophy too

Pushing the envelope...

We're the Pirates. Our big offseason acquisition screams 'flip for prospects at the deadline.' As long as we have prospects, ownership will say the time isn't right
The thing is if they were just following KC last year they would know you can spend just a fair amount and make the playoffs when that’s added to young talent.

Ive been a fan since day 1. I went to every oldtimers game and other exhibition games at RFK, I wanted a MLB team. I have a block letter Nationals jacket with the block DC letters. I have enjoyed going to games every season, I have  attended 4 different post season games and love watching ball. I am completely fed up with the Learners and what they have done to this team since Ted was not able to run the team and even worse since he passed away. They are the 3rd richest owners in BASEBALL and refuse to spend any money on the team.  I will not be attending any games this season and hope all fans limit how often they go to home games. Travel to watch them and give the other owners the money. Baltimore, Philly, NY, Cleveland and Pittsburg are not that far away.

What would happen if the team came out and did something stupid like give Alonso 200M? Would everyone cry fowl, or say thank you for finally spending?

I’d be happy they were at least trying. Nothing about this offseason indicates that ownership is trying to win

Right now, excluding Strasburg, they're 29th in payroll above league minimum, with $38 million committed to arb-eligible players and veterans.  Only the Marlins are lower.

They've got six seasons left with Wood and Crews and they're still tanking.   Compare where this org is to the Orioles, who had 101 wins in Adley Rutschman's 2nd year, and who've had a far more productive farm system.  Rizzo's man crushes on power pitchers have been a major problem that have made the impact of Mini Me's penny pinching even worse.  Maybe they crank out a few winning seasons between '27 and '30 when the Phillies start choking on the Harper, Turner, and Nola contracts, but who knows when Mini Me refuses to pay his pre-free agency closer whom he praised in his end of year letter to fans.  This is the biggest joke of an operation I've seen in decades of being a baseball fan.

To be fair the Prates have been doing this for quite a few years.

Pirates, A's, Royals, ect. This is pretty standard for lower end markets. This is basically how they earn operated for over a decade.

Like I said a while ago, I hope everyone enjoyed 2019

7 years, $210 million, would get a Bregman deal done. Maybe 6 years, $180 million, with an opt out after year 2. I'd love the lineup with him, but I am as skeptical as anyone about their willingness to pay.

That's a horrendous deal. I'd rather do nothing than that.

All are spending more than the Nats right now.   None has the Nats ticket prices or is in a top 10 media market like DC.

Was trying to understand how the Lerners could be this awful.   This article provided some insight on how the family operates.

MLBTR:

"Bregman’s reported asking price of at least $200MM appears to be the hold-up" for Detroit.

Quote
Bregman already turned down a reported six-year, $156MM offer from the Astros earlier this winter, which was the first step towards what now looks like the end of a reunion possibility between the third baseman and his longtime team.

Nats should overpay the $200 million for six or seven years. Bregman hits and plays third. He is not the classic "big body slugger" who declines after 32 or so. Further, if the Lerners hope to sell for more money, they will get more money for an improving, a competitive, team than for something that barely beats Miami.

Bregman is every bit as repulsive to me as Royce is.  I'd rather we lose 100 game without him than win 100 with him...

Not to worry though...I imagine I too will get my wish.  There's no way the Lerner's will cough up that kind of dough for 1 player ever again...their days of wanting to be competitive has long since passed...

At this point, I would be happy with Winker, Floro, and AJ Minter.

At this point, I'd be happy to find out that the Lerners aren't deferring the bat boy's wages.

I hated Bryce after he left. Now, I’m back to loving him. I wish him all the personal success in the world as long as he never wins a ring with the Phillies.

I’m very happy they traded for luzardo. Gave up an 18 year old Top 100 prospect for a major leaguer with two years of service time left who is still all potential and very little results
