Why?  Did he leave the game?

.

You are referring to Robles?  Hasn’t started baseball activities yet.

So is it roster crunch cut time this off-season for him?

I can see Garrett in LF, Robles in CF and Thomas in RF on OD barring injury. 4th OF will be Call. For those who are overly optimistic Crews starts in AA unless he gets promoted this season to Harrisburg and excels. Still will start in AA next April and skip Rochester. Wood isn’t even close and may see DC next September.

Carl Edwards shut down with a stress fracture in his right scapula per talknats. He’s done.

Not sure I've ever heard of a stress fracture in a scapula before.  Pitching is a violent motion I guess.

Davey says Garrett suffered a lower leg injury, not knee or ankle

Last update is that they were waiting for X-ray results and that he’ll have further scans done tonight or tomorrow.

Btw, Vic appears to be done for the season: https://www.masnsports.com/nationals-rss/still-injured-robles-running-out-of-time-to-return-in-2023

Guessing blankenhorn heads to the Bronx tomorrow.

My guess is Garcia is back and Vargas is in the OF.

I just assume Vargas will start at LF and 3B

at the same time, no doubt. It's what you'd expect out of a utility guy.

Didn't they expose Alu to LF?

More likely it's Call full-time in CF, Thomas in right, and perhaps Downs gets recalled to platoon with Rutherford in left.

The other way to play it would be to put Joey in right and Thomas in CF / LF, with Rutherford and Call in a platoon. That opens DH for Ruiz and Adams. Maybe Millas gets called up?

There is no legitimate reason why Vargas should be a regular starter.

Play Kieboom at third
Play Alu at second
Put Rutherford in LF against RHP, Meneses in LF against LHP
DH Riley or Ruiz against LHP.

they could conceivably call up Milas to let Adams and Ruiz DH every day.

I think Thaddeus Ward may get starts when he comes back. That's consistent with Davey's statements about getting him up to 65-75 pitches during rehab.

Quote
Thaddeus Ward will make a rehab start for Wilmington on Thursday after rehabbing from right shoulder inflammation. Ward, the team’s Rule 5 pick from in December, was used out of the bullpen to open the year. The goal for his start Thursday is to pitch four innings.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/08/23/nationals-yankees-stone-garrett-aaron-judge/

No mention of giving Vargas more pitching opportunities.

Garrett is on the DL with a broken leg, so he's done for the year.

So I guess a break is probably better than some alternatives?

Broken fibula is the diagnosis. Return would depend on the kind / severity of the break I assume.

Yea. He's not gonna be back in six weeks. Sucks for him, he was just getting into the groove

Fibula is the weight-bearing bone in the lower leg? Femur is the thigh bone. I suppose if it is a simple clean break, it heals well. Don't know how long. Need Bluestreak to chime in

It's the smaller bone in the lower leg (tibia is way thicker) but regardless, it's a break and it will take longer than six weeks to heal.

I'm more concerned about February. If it is the thinner bone, then I'd imagine the bone might mend quicker, but with the leg in a cast, there's going to be a lot of atrophy.
