Brings up another difference with the NBA.  You can give your won guys an extra year as a free agent than other teams can.

Good teams can also be assembled via trade and the best teams ignore the tax

The players basically decide where they want to play and who they want to play with them.  Top guys anyway.

Last year’s championship featured two home grown teams, the year before was homegrown vs a team with one star traded there.

Everyone wants to stay in Golden State.

It’s still pretty much a players league. Guys don’t want to play in a city?  They get traded.  Does not always work out of course but it’s still a factor.

The NBA has such a unique set of cap rules that it just isn't comparable to any other league, especially baseball

Explain Milwaukee the year before. The city excuse is BS; the Wizards suck because they routinely botch the draft and refuse to trade players who won’t be part of a winning team for draft assets. The best teams in the league right now all feature home grown stars. The last three prominent player created teams (both LA teams and the Nets) are non-factors. The Lakers will be lucky if they don’t end up gifting the Pelicans a great lottery pick

Never said any of that was untrue.  But you also had Kawhi demanding out is SA and getting a title in Toronto. And Lebron got his title in LA. After picking his teams and winning titles in Miami and Cleveland. GS drafted great and got three gems in Curry, Thompson and Green none of whom were high first round picks. Of course signing KD also helped win a title and Wiggins was a big part of last year. They are so far over the luxury tax line though in keeping these guys it’s hard to compare them to anyone else. Maybe like the Dodgers in baseball. Their guys like it there. I didn’t mean the city. I meant the team culture. And they have an advantage in keeeping these guys because the league rules allow them to give longer contracts.  If Steph Curru said he wanted to join Lebron he would be traded tomorrow.

Anyone willing to take on his contract could have had Wigans. The wizards actually drafted ahead of golden state in all of those years and walked away with crappy trade returns and forgettable players. Toronto got a title out of Kawhi and is still a top team in the east. The era of Lebron gifting titles to cities is over and it seems like the next generation is more content to stay put. You have to get a star and build around them, but the Wizards both lack the star and refuse to admit that Beal isn’t that guy. Even if cities like Milwaukee, Denver, Dallas, Memphis, New Orleans… lose their guy, they still get a rookie contract and the first extension (no one has turned down that deal yet) to compete. You have Detroit, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Orlando behind them and Oklahoma City, Houston, and Salt Lake setting themselves up to be next. Meanwhile the Wizards are holding onto Beal and that hope of a 10th seed. To me, that makes Ted a horrible owner

Two people shot leaving Nats Park in two years can't help the resale value.

Two shootings in the Nats Park area tonight. If I was looking into spending $2 billion to buy a business I probably would be concerned about it being located in a shooting gallery.

From @RealTimeNews10 on Twitter:
Quote
NON CONTACT SHOOTING AT NAVY YARD: IAO Buffalo Wild Wings 1200 Half St. S.E. MPD on scene investigating a shooting with no individuals found with gunshot wound injuries. One individual was evaluated for cuts by glass, that individual has refuse any further medical care.

ANOTHER NON CONTACT SHOOTING: 1100 Bl. of First St. S.E. MPD on scene investigating reports of another shooting in the Navy Yard area. It is unconfirmed whether this is related to the Half St. Shots fired incident. Also one individual may be in custody. Information is limited.

Navy Yard been on 1,000 lately. Damn near shootings every other day over there. Stay safe folks.

Maybe because I worked in all parts of DC for 27 years, but I've never gone to Nats park and thought it might be dangerous. That area is so much better than it used to be.

Is this shtick? Less than ideal but can't imagine this moves a needle on a sale.

It adds a huge amount of risk for the purchaser. If you buy the team and there is another shooting how do you get fans with families to buy tickets? Gun violence is assumed in the city but Nats Park was believed to be an oasis. Silver Diner just opened there and they have their place pictured in crime scene photos. BWW is now in crime scene photos. Would you purchase a spot in that area to open a restaurant before the city gets the crime under control?

Lol, two shooting in two years doesn't move the needle. There were two shootings in Chinatown in August and no one remembers crap.

not quite.  This is about the impact of violent crime incidents on the ability to sell the team.  That's more specific to this topic than the broader 2021 thread on crime near the park.

Six months after the Lerner family announced its intention to explore a sale of the Washington Nationals, Major League Baseball has inserted itself into the negotiations to resolve an issue that has hampered the franchise since it relocated to the nation’s capital: the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.

A group led by Monumental Sports founder Ted Leonsis — which has financial backing from D.C. philanthropist David Rubenstein — has been in discussions with the investment bank overseeing the process, and several people familiar with the process believe Leonsis to be the leading candidate to purchase the Nationals.

But MLB is aware that any new owner would want to know how much money it would receive from MASN for the team’s regional media rights. An MLB official said Tuesday that it is engaged in negotiating certainty about that revenue going forward — a step that could give Leonsis’s group confidence to move forward with its bid.

Manfred needs to grow a pair and get the Orioles to move on the MASN issue. Plenty of ways for them to go about that.  It is long overdue.

Unfortunately the article makes it sound like there is no way the Nats are going to wrangle their TV rights away from the Orioles. MLB is just trying to get a concrete figure in terms of what sort of rights fees can be expected. At least that was my takeaway.
