Is the MASN BS going to drag out this sale for a decade?   This team will be run completely to the ground and will be tough to continue to care about in any way if we're going to spend multiple seasons in lame duck mode.

It shouldn't.  $100M is a big chunk of money, but it shouldn't derail a two to three billion dollar sale.

100 million is only the tip of the ice berg and for the 2012-2017 years.   There's more than that tied up in the 2017-2022 years, plus a complete uncertainty of what they can get over the next 5-10 years.   There's probably over a billion dollars in limbo from 2012-2032.

https://www.talknats.com/2022/11/26/think-reality-nats-selling-off-now/

Quote
Sources have told us that the Lerner family and sports team investor, Ted Leonsis, were getting close to an agreement on the sale of the Washington Nationals earlier this month, but on Friday a source told us that they were still too far apart on being able to shake hands on a final price due to each sides’ valuation of the MASN situation.

That source told us that a sale of the team has not been called off, but he does not know if the two sides can meet in the middle on a final price, and that led our source to think that this sale might not happen at all this year or ever. Okay, ‘ever’ is a long time — but that was our sources wording.  Another source we reached out to, thought that a different structure of the deal was a possibility, to still bring Leonsis in, however, this source would not elaborate any further on that.

MLB needs to force a settlement  of the MASN situation.   The Nat will be run into the ground if the MASN battle continues another 5-10 years.   They've already done some irreparable damage to the fan base here.  If this continues another year or two, the franchise is probably not even viable.

MLB attempted to do that with the arbitration hearing.

If the franchise isnt viable, its because the Lerners intentionally made it that way. The reason this team is so bad is due to their unwillingness to invest in the team the last three years.

Fans can stick around for a re-build.   An un-build that continues to unwind is another story with no reason for any kind of hope is another story.   The MASN situation is really coming to a head now it seems like.   The Lerner's don't want to sink any more money into the team, and can't sell it because of the MASN mess, then what's the end game here?

All I can say is crapshow. MLB could have forced an end to this long ago. But they were scared of Angelos. I think the Lerners are to blame also for thinking that they could win in court. Only the lawyers have benefitted and the fans will continue to be screwed.

you would think that the price could be set with a variety of bottom lines dependent on the range of MASN outcomes. Maybe that's tricky because it reveals the Lerners' bottom line on the MASN negotiation, but if the bottom number is the Orioles offer and the top is the Lerners's ask in the negotiations, you could value the team based on the O's offer with a kicker if the final number is an amount up to the Lerners's ask.  Set parameters for how much the kicker could be and under what conditions.

It’s not as if someone else couldn’t leak all of what MLB would be worried about Angelos leaking — much of which already leaked out:

As far as litigation, how did the junior Angeloses think that would affect their future actions, especially with people on different sides of things as it appears?

I'm hoping that the Orioles move to Nashville and MLB assigns their TV rights to the Braves and Rays who currently share the Nashville TV market.

The Lerners just want to maximize the sale. Thats it. Thats the issue. MASN isnt a great deal, but the only reason its prohibiting the sale is because the Lerners want 2.5 billion instead of 1.85.

MLB butting into RSN negotiations sets a dangerous precedent.

if it Leonsis, he probably wants MASN untangled because putting the nats on Monumental is how he makes money off of the deal. Angelos could easily just be saying no. At some point, MLB needs to step in and fix it. The commissioner has the best interest clause that he can use to force hands if he needs to.

The Angelos brothers are suing each other so I'm not sure if anyone in that organization is able to make a deal to resolve MASN without one side or the other objecting. Manfred can't force anything at this time, Angelos as a court injunction in place preventing the Nats from making any changes to the current deal as long as the court case is pending. Any involvement from MLB will be seen as bias in favor of the Nats.

The Lerners options at this point appear to be either to sell the team at a reduced price due to the pending litigation or wait until Peter Angelos dies.

Manfred can remind Angelo’s that ownership transfers require approval and that the MASN uncertainly isn’t the best time for it to occur

How long until we hear rumors that the Nats are moved back to Montreal and then right after that happens, the MASN deal implodes and the Orioles move to Nashville?

This is the best article I've seen that sums up the MASN situation:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/06/06/nationals-sale-masn-orioles/

There's a lot of embarrassment to go around on this whole situation not the least of which is the court system. Here from the article:

"A decade ago, the Nationals sued MASN over tens of millions of dollars in rights fees that they believed MASN owed them. That lawsuit is ongoing. Meanwhile, the relationship between the network and the Nationals has become so acrimonious that the sides are also embroiled in a separate lawsuit over how the network’s profits are distributed."

"But the Nationals also have a new form of leverage. In addition to MASN’s outlook, a New York court found that MASN owes the Nationals some $100 million in back pay for rights between 2012 and 2017. The Orioles are appealing, but the Nationals’ TV rights since 2017 could be an entirely new lawsuit. "

What's wrong with the court system where they just let it sit before them indefinitely?

The civil court system at this level is designed for lawyers to accrue as many billable hours as possible so the lawsuit is going as planned for those who really matter, the lawyers.

Which makes me wonder who is responsible for saying the court system is broken, here's what we need to do to fix it.
