Seems if we are going to trade Corbin, now is the time, especially with a number of other sell-candidate pitchers going down with UCL tears in the last few weeks:

https://www.masnsports.com/blog/corbin-s-string-of-solid-starts-makes-nats-upcoming-decision-harder

Outside of paying the rest of his salary and only getting back a D prospect, I can’t see there being interest in Corbin.  The ONLY hope to even get a Lester for Lane type lottery prospect back is if Corbin gets hot these next few weeks and a team is desperate last minute for an arm to give them 5-6 innings every turn.

given his history, he really needs to be dominant and reliable over the next 4 or so weeks. Then, the Nats could get something back if they ate all or most of the amount due, including next year's deferred money.

The truth is if he didn’t have his contract the past few years he’s a minor league free agent that bounces around and is released over and over until he’s out of baseball.

The Brewers are trading for Dallas Keuchel. Corbin is viable as a trade candiate if Rizzo can eat salary.

They didn’t send the M’s any prospects at all, just “cash considerations.”  Again, barring some miracle run of great pitching the next month, the best you can do is eat basically the entire remaining amount owed and get a bag of balls in return.  That’s fine, take the bag of balls and if you have enough pitching internally to finish out the season.

Better yet, DFA him.  The symbolism of that is worth more than a bag of marbles.  There could have ben a real return if Corbin were made into a multiple-inning reliever.  Oh, but that might have hurt his feelings.

The only viable trading partner for Corbin and his low K rate + high ERA is the team that plays against the Savannah Bananas.  Lerners + Rizzo are playing the contract as they like to do.

Exactly. Although, right now, the Nats rotation is a little thin, with Gray hurt, and looking like it will be TJS time, with Cade Cavalli still not available.

He's not getting DFA'd.  They're probably trying to figure out how to keep the bullpen from being gassed for the 6-7 weeks between the ASB and Sept. callups.  There will likely be more shuffling between Rochester and DC, but Corbin's staying in the rotation.

Eh, he's gone at least 5 innings every start since the beginning of May, and has given up more than 4 runs twice since the middle of April.  He's a back of the rotation innings eater at this point. I don't think that has value to any team looking for a rotation upgrade, but until the Nats have 5 more interesting arms, he can stay.

Do Herz and Rutledge qualify?

I don't think so right now. There's Gore Irvin Parker for sure, but I think both Herz and Rutledge are spotty. I kind of prefer them to relieve. Assuming Gray is done for the year, Cavalli I think has one slot, then that leaves one more

I'm not averse to giving Rutledge a few more starts.  I agree that he's likely a reliever, and I think the same on Herz, but given his options status you have to find out.  His AAA numbers stink, but there's more arm talent there than guys who have done worse at the MLB level with DooHickey working on them.

This is his sixth year in the system and his second option year, and this is a former first round pick.  It's time to give him a chance and see if he can do it, even if it means having him and Corbin go tandem for a guaranteed L every 5 days, which is no different than the present state of Corbin but with less bullpen burn.

he could pick up some innings late in the year, but he's done until past the trade deadline

Looking that way.

https://www.masnsports.com/blog/williams-gallo-still-ways-away-cavalli-ferrer-going-to-florida-during-break

Thanks. It sounds like maybe some time in August or September. If he comes back effective maybe sign him to a team friendly contract for 2025.

So how much of his salary do you want to keep and what do you get back.

Who cares about the other two questions...all that matters is - can we do this today?

eat it all. I still am not sure of a destination, but I think the kicker to his trade value might be the extra lefty in relief in the playoffs angle.

Team is playing at a 74 win pace. Which is at least as good as the roster. And probably better. Enjoy the high draft pick. Glass half full.

I think most of us would have been happy with this at the start of the season. Me, I expected a step back from 71.

And with no Cavalli all season. No Gray. Gallo and Rosario were basically useless. That’s on the owners and GM.

TBH, Rosario was a drag on the team. Gallo's D kind of made up a bit for his lack of contact or big power (his OBP I think was passable).

No amount of defense at first makes up for a .606 OPS
