To win a popular contest?

For having betrayed that popularity...

Royce became popular by giving it his all.  I'm glad he's no longer running into walls; and I can deal with a slump; I can deal with the fact he can no longer throw like he once did, but the pouting and refusal to hustle is beyond the pale.

The Big Intern sat him for it once.  Since then he's gotten a pass...and it's bad optics...

He should be embarased? Pouting and refusing to hustle? Sometimes you see what you want to see.

I get it that some fans hate today's big name superstars who make tons of money and who have a lot of flash to their game. But the personal attacks on Harper are getting downright weird. Weird as in obsessively weird.

Agree. I don't question Harper wants to win, and even if you think he doesn't want to win then at least buy in he wants to produce and get paid.

No, but he isn't that far away. He is making it largely on reputation but he is neither the first nor will he be the last.

Has 1.5 WAR with horrendous defensive stats.

Tell that to the guys that measure WAR then...

My bad, I mis-read his numbers...he's at 1.5 WAR...

By contrast...Mike Trout is at 6.5...

You are correct...I saw a -1.4 WAR for defense and thought that netted out the offense...

So maybe a 2018 version of the 2010 Adam Dunn?

Playing like a $20MM player?

Going all out on every play (before running into a few walls) did contribute  to his initial popularity. I remember his first at bat, a one-hopper back to the pitcher, he sprinted out of the box and almost beat the throw.  Shortly after, a similar comebacker, the pitcher, anticipating the same, rushed the throw and threw the ball into right field.  And then, how about when he stole home off of Hamels. Who else does that?

But that was the old Harper.  Injuries have a way of slowing us all down.

Yeah, I mean, he played all-out, and that added to his youthful exuberance, but he was popular at age 16 for being a baseball prodigy, not for playing hard. And he was popular in the minors for being a beast and being brash at times. Harper was one of the most popular baseball players in the country before he was ever running into walls.
