Multiple sources have told me that the #Dodgers have checked in on availability of Bryce Harper. #Nats are still undecided on if they want to sell, but if they do, LA is a likely destination.

They are in a bind and have to trade Harper, Rizzo won't want to get a 4th round supplemental pick for him. Trade Harper and go with an OF of Eaton/Taylor/Soto, with Robles likely up soon as well.

If we could get a haul for Harper, I wish we could do it without it meaning we are in "sell" mode. Harper is torturing our lineup and my guess is he isn't going to suddenly regain his MVP form. He seems to strike out twice every game, some games three times. We'd be better of without him.

The Nats aren't going to get a haul, but that trading Harper doesn't magically make you sell mode. The guy is hitting .205/.324 /.457 since May 1. He is completely replaceable.

And honestly, if he returns to his MVP form, it's already been shown that it's not enough to get you to the playoffs. Everyone else hitting and pitching well with Taylor playing CF > All that and Harper hitting well.

So you're faced with choosing between a 4th round supplemental pick, or whatever prospect a team offers.

Could we get Keibert Ruiz for Harper? 20-year old catching prospect. Currently .242 / .310 / .379 at AA. Played in the futures game.

I mean, don't get me wrong, Rizzo has pulled some amazing deal, but if he could get Ruiz for the garbage bucket that is Harper, it would be his most amazing coup ever.

yeah, agreed. From what I've read the Dodgers have 3 solid catching prospects, with Ruiz at the top of the food chain. I'm guessing Ruiz would require Harper plus a lot more. The Orioles reportedly asked for him in the Machado deal and were told NFW.

I'm constantly amazed by how many people downplay or underestimate the value of a catcher. Honestly, it's probably the most important position on the field. If you have someone who can play decent catcher and hit, you have gold.

JT Realmuto will not be a Marlin when the Marlins finally expect to compete in the NL East. I'm baffled why they're holding onto to his guy. Same goes for Justin Bour.

They're holding on to him because they knew what he's worth and no one has offered up what he's worth.

What do you base that on? The Giants have been not so great the past couple years with Posey. Realmuto doesn't help the Marlins even when they still had their outfield. Is there any actual evidence that a catcher is more important than other positions? I've seen articles stating it but no real evidence.

Well today we found out that Rizzo is shopping Harper. if it is the Dodgers it better be Bellinger back.

The Yankees report i dont believe. Sanchez and Bird is not what i want.

That's good because there is no way the Yankees would give up Sanchez or Bird for two months of a .215 hitter. He would get a middling and some low level prospects. Same as Machado this year and Martinez last year.

Bellinger? Dream on.

All the reports I saw were that the Dodgers were the ones reaching out, not the other way around. So this may all just be a ploy by the dodgers to plant the seed for their offseason pursuit.

Phillie almost did it in 2005 or 2006 after they traded Bobby Abreu? The Nats seem like the kind of team to do that. They play better when the pressure is off.

Harper, even with the terrible year he's having, is OPSing .839 in the major leagues. Seems like trading that for a player who's OPSing .689 in AA isn't much of deal.

How many catchers have done what Realmuto is doing with the bat? He's 5th in wRC+ among catchers the last ten years. 3rd in OPS. He's on pace for a 6 WAR season, which puts him in the top 5. That list has two MVP seasons and a future HoFer in it. Finding a catcher who can hit and durably catch behind the plate is basically the holy grail of position players. Literally every club in MLB is looking for one right now.

Look at what the Orioles got for Machado who is having a better year than Harper. The Dodgers 6th best prospect and some lower level prospects. It's amazing how delusional some fans are. Will they get a better return because he won the HR Derby? Because he has nice hair? Harper is not going anywhere.

He's still being carried by his fiirst month. He's a sub .800, mediocre defending outfielder since April.

And getting a decent catching prospect in return for that is pretty amazing.

Astros won last year with McCann as catcher.
Cubs won the year before rotating guys including David Ross.
Royals won with Salvatore Perez.

Having a great catcher is no guarantee of anything. In fact the better hitter they are the more likely they will be moved to 1B. The Marlins are overvaluing him to make up for giving other guys away. It's still just one position.
