Love what the Showalters have done this offseason. Now all they need is a veteran starter to hold the fifth spot in the rotation until Tillman is ready.

Fascinating move by the Rays. It seems more and more like there are Boras teams, and everyone else. Luckily the Nats fall in the right category considering the talent he represents. But not only signing both Manny and Damon, but on the same day? Awesome move. And further, signing two Type A/B players, both of whom don't need compensatory picks because they weren't offered arbitration? By the team that has a hundred first round picks already? The Rays really seem like a team that knows what it's doing and how to build. Getting all their picks that they've accumulated, and then signing these two players of their talent level without having to even give up a single pick out of luck? The Rays are really going to be a fearsome beast not only in the future if just a handful of these picks amount to anything, but the club they've put together now isn't too shabby either. This team should be the model for all average payroll clubs. Just a stellar FO.

Maybe, but look at what Boston did this offseason in the same divisio. Long term I think the Rays are screwed since their success is premused on hitting with so many of their draft picks in a sport where the draft is essentially a crap shoot.

20 years ago the MLB draft was a crapshoot.  Now it's becoming more and more of a sure thing.  The developmental aspect takes longer than other sports but a good GM/scouting staff should be able to produce at least league average MLB players with the occasional star.

You know, Wells' contract might knock the Angels out of the Albert Pujols sweepstakes. Which basically leaves the Cardinals, Cubs, the inevitable mystery team (LAD? SEA?), and us.

I like this deal a heck of a lot more for Toronto than LAA.  They aren't getting more power out of this than they had in Napoli, and are locked into around $85 MM over the next 4 years for Wells.  They had OF depth, especially in center, and now they are talking about Wells in center.  They may take on another old guy to lead off, Podsednik, if they shift Abreu to DH.  Even if they wanted to squeeze Napoli out of playing time and rely on Mathis / Conger behind the plate, Napoli alone should have been worth more.  Maybe they viewed Rivera at this point as a liability they had to dump, but they have to hope an older Wells does not regress from last year's bounce back to get equivalent offense to Napoli.

Meanwhile, Anthopoulos is terrific. I'm not exactly sure where they will play Rivera and Napoli, but that is a nice thing for them.  Napoli can catch more if Arrencibia does not pan out, DH more if he does, or slide to first if they decide Lind can't play there.  Rivera can play in the corners or DH if they are not satisfied with Encarnacion, again playing off of Lind.  With AA and Friedman, Theo is at best the 3d best GM in the division, and MacPhail and Cashman have their strong points, too.

On the Damon and Manny signing, you sort of wonder if the two decided to be a package deal. $2MM for Manny?  He lost 4 times that on his 50 game drug suspension.

Neyer already is talking about something I thought about when I pushed a bit for a Damon signing here - he may end up at first base.  He apparently practices there and is quite open to the move.  At $5.25 MM for one year, and with our pretty desperate need for top of the order hitters and his dead pull swing, I really wonder if we missed the boat in bringing in LaRoche instead of him and deciding not to go with Morse / Damon at first and left.

I'd have been more open to it than LaRoche.

I've got a hunch that Manny and Damon sold themselves as a package when no one broke down the doors for them.

Not especially, but they could easily be nostalgic about The Idiots and not yet ready to join Millar on MLB TV.

Without Millar, they are equal to the kids of Lake Woebegone.

Could Toronto be in it as well? I believe their payroll is around $55 mil after the trade, Pujols at 30 mil/yr gets them to 85, and as a playoff team, they could fit into that range well.

That definitely puts them in the race. Oh, man. Can you imagine the AL East with FOUR legit playoff teams?

As long as Angelos has to suck an egg and finish 5th every year, I'm all for it.  Still hate that he killed the team of my childhood.

I can't decide who is a worse outfielder - Damon or Manny? The Rays will not be happy with this.

Damon has had a positive UZR 3 of the last 4 years in LF.

How many games for the tigers?

Only 33 with 31 starts.  About 220 innings.  0.6 UZR, 4.6 UZR/150.  09, in the new Yankee Stadium, is the only negative UZR he's put up in LF.
