I like this deal a heck of a lot more for Toronto than LAA. They aren't getting more power out of this than they had in Napoli, and are locked into around $85 MM over the next 4 years for Wells. They had OF depth, especially in center, and now they are talking about Wells in center. They may take on another old guy to lead off, Podsednik, if they shift Abreu to DH. Even if they wanted to squeeze Napoli out of playing time and rely on Mathis / Conger behind the plate, Napoli alone should have been worth more. Maybe they viewed Rivera at this point as a liability they had to dump, but they have to hope an older Wells does not regress from last year's bounce back to get equivalent offense to Napoli.
Meanwhile, Anthopoulos is terrific. I'm not exactly sure where they will play Rivera and Napoli, but that is a nice thing for them. Napoli can catch more if Arrencibia does not pan out, DH more if he does, or slide to first if they decide Lind can't play there. Rivera can play in the corners or DH if they are not satisfied with Encarnacion, again playing off of Lind. With AA and Friedman, Theo is at best the 3d best GM in the division, and MacPhail and Cashman have their strong points, too.
