This sucks why arent we making any moves...

We wanted only 1 guy and we lost him. The second guy we want, and all seem to think we can go out and get now (see OH for similiar sentiments) has multiple suiters.

Dunn just got a little further away

Quote
Apparently, the Dodgers aren't going to sit around all winter, waiting for Manny Ramirez to beg to come back. They now have Adam Dunn on their shopping list.

Dunn
The Dodgers contacted Dunn's agent, Greg Genske, over the holidays, according to an executive of a team interested in Dunn. And that creates an intriguing option for both parties.

Dunn has also drawn interest from the Cubs, Nationals, Mariners and Orioles. But adding the Dodgers to that mix gives him another contender to consider. The Cubs had believed to be his top choice before the Dodgers entered the mix.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, need to infuse power into a lineup that finished 14th in the National League in home runs last season. And with no certainty that they can re-sign Ramirez, they seem to have decided that Dunn represents their best alternative.

Dunn has hit exactly 40 home runs four years in a row -- which would be four more 40-homer seasons than all Dodgers hitters combined have had in those four seasons. No Dodger has reached 40 home runs since Adrian Beltre in 2004.

After batting just .215, with only two homers, at Dodger Stadium in his first six seasons, Dunn has had much better success over the last two years, batting .389 (7 for 18) in L.A., with two home runs and an .833 slugging percentage, in 2007-08.

Dunn also would require no draft-pick compensation because his former team, Arizona, didn't offer him arbitration.

It's time to package up some prospects and make some trades for long term pieces. We can get guys with 2+ years left and sign them to longer term deals. This is what Jimbo has done in the past with guys like Kearns, Lopez, Olsen, Willingham. We need a major league caliber 1B and some relief help. It does not have to be a superstud like Adrian Gonzalez, but we have to field a major league team. It's time for overspending on Dunn and for some of the "beloved" prospects to go. 3 maybes for a sure thing is fine with me. If we ever want to sign top talent, we have to become a reasonable team that hovers around .500. I'm not saying sell the farm, but it's time to trade a few guys with serious potential. Especially since we have 2 top 10 draft picks.

The difference between this year and previous years MUST be trades. If we aren't going to sign anyone, then say goodbye to guys like Norris, Burgess, Bernadina. Yes, 1 of the 3 of them might work out, but if we can get a real live Major League 1B, then we need to do it.

And there are some dopes here who think Dunn's going to take a pay cut.

So, what's our Plan C?  :panic:

Yep, looks like that is what we are going with. NJ gets yet another chance to prove that he can stay healthy. :?

That might not be as bad as it sounds. Nick's in his contract year and literally can't afford another lengthy stint on the DL. I'm expecting a good year from him.  :)

NJ's one of my all time favorites, and I'm not expecting crap from him. Enough is enough. If this were football he'd have been cut ages ago. Sad but true.

isn't getting Manny for 2 years a good option then?  i think we will be able to unload him towards the end of the year if someone is looking to make a push.

I think he provides us a year of letting the likes of Burgess, Berendina, Morrero and so on develop.

if we can bring in another piece via a Manny trade and put some people in the seats, then we are better off.

Since he's our default starting 1B, we may as well cross our fingers and hope for the best.  ;)

I'll take Manny for 2 years over Dunn for 3-4 years any day.

This is a moot point though since Manny will never play for a terrible team like ours' anyways. People just don't get it. No one wants to play for a perennial last place team that lost 102 games last season.

Yes. Manny will be great being under payed by a 102 games loser. After he dogged it in Boston I doubt anyone would trust him in the FO except maybe Bowden.

Let them develop somewhere else - no more waiting. The season ticket holders should be demanding a .500 team at this point.

A sign and trade on Manny is not a terribly horrible idea except that our lineup will be absolutely killed vs. left handed pitching. Why not blow Dunn away with a 1 year offer, then he can try the market next year when the economy is better? An impeding FA Dunn might be really easy to trade at mid-season, or worth holding onto for draft picks.

Right. That's why we have to improve NOW - by overpaying for Dunn or by trading some of your precious P-Nats. If we become pathetic like KC or Pittsburgh we will be screwed.

Ok that excuses total inaction in 2006. How about 2007 and 2008?

Dude we already are like KC or Pitt.

We can offer all the money in the world to FAs but if they don't want to play here (which most don't) then they will not sign here.

We need to at least show some progress in '09 (close to .500 record) to try to attract some FAs next offseason.

The only way we sniff .500 is with more trades or overpaying for your nemesis. Jeez.

I don't believe this. If you blow them away with an offer other teams are unwilling to match they will take the money. You are not going to convince me that players stopped following the money over the last couple of years and that all they really care about is winning.
