Yep. They are no longer developing an audience, they are chasing the almighty dollar with no regard for their users.
I'm 21 and rapidly cooling on Facebook. I only use it to create photo albums so friends in the USA can see what I'm up to. You're right that Facebook is increasingly powered by ads, but it's also commoditizing every element of one's personal description.

What I mean is, you used to join groups describing you, like "I Survived Mr Ormiston's Physics Class" or "The Beethoven Appreciation Society," and you used to have boxes where you could write all your favorite movies/TV/whatever. Now, that's changed: instead, you browse through official pages operated by the TV show, or movie studio, or corporation, and hit "Like" when you like one. Only when I "like" something is it clear to my friends.

So for example, a year ago all my friends could go to my Info and read a list of my ten favorite books. Now what they see is a list of three or four books which have official pages - ie, you click on the book, you get an official summary of its contents, a cover photo, and an ISBN number so you can go to Amazon and buy it.

I've just noticed while writing this post that I used to have an "interests" box that said "reading, writing, walking, baking desserts, finding new Turkish restaurants, Washington Nationals baseball" or something like that, but the "interests" box has been changed without my permission to say "The Economist, The New York Times, Petrucci Music Library, Roger Ebert"! When I decided to change it back, I typed in "Wri" and was offered a choice between "Writing", "Reading & Writing," or "Writer." So you can't just make up your own unique interests anymore.

Just to demonstrate how things change, my kids (college and high school aged) are cooling rapidly on Facebook.

Interesting.  I check Facebook occasionally, but mostly do quick Twitter updates and Skype is always open on my laptop and often on my Droid X.

Which is really too bad because pre-2007 Facebook was actually pretty cool.  It hasn't went totally MySpace yet (i.e. obnoxious ad city and browser crashing profiles) but it's getting there.  I give it a few more years before it goes the way of MySpace and Friendster.  Where will the kids go next?

Holy crap. This is like The Princess Bride, but 5000 times more amazing. The fact that they used no computer effects sounds mildly cool until you watch it and spend half the movie going holy crap!

Looks good, but nothing beats the Princess Bride, except maybe the book with the same title.

Finally watched "The Damned United"...outstanding.  English footie before the likes of Posh Spice became part of the mix.

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Classic.

That was one of the rare instances where I actually thought the movie was better than the book.

Finished it. It's very different from Princess Bride in intentions: in fact The Fall is in many ways tragic. But there really is nothing else like it. It's mind-blowing. It's like somebody opened their head and pulled out all their wildest dreams and threw them onto a screen, and then woke up from the trance and realized that reality is even crazier. Here's my blog post about it. http://bit.ly/gAxJiH

Depends on the movie.  Werner Herzog films like "Fitzcarraldo" and "Aguirre, Der Zorn Gottes" have epic commentary by Herzog himself.  How he hasn't died 20 times over now, I'll never know.

Wow, Skype is so a decade ago. It would be shocking if it turned into the next big thing after so long. It's always been pretty big with the gaming community, but didn't take off otherwise. I'll be interested to see if the general public finally accepts it as the next big social networking thing.

I think the emphasis may be switching from social networking to more interpersonal networking. Or maybe it's just my kids' ages. They use Skype to do homework as a group, video chat with friends, etc.

Depends.  The one Abel Ferrara did for "King of New York" was pretty great.  When a commentary track starts out "I'm only here 'cause they paid me $5000 cash" you know it's going to be good.

How he survived being around that Klaus Kinsky freak is a bit of a mystery

In one commentary (or maybe it was his documentary "My Best Fiend") Herzog says that at one point he and Kinski had simultaneous plans to murder each other.  Kinski was seriously bat crap crazy.  In one scene in Aguirre where he is to hit someone in the helmet with his sword, he literally DOES bash the crap out of the guy, puts a huge dent in his helmet, and pretty much gives the guy a concussion.

I pretty much love watching anything that Herzog and Kinski did together.

Saw this was posted two pages back but re saying it with my opinion:

Dark Knight Rises will feature
-Tom Hardy as Bane
-Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman
-----------------------------------------

It will be the final film of the series.

This seems really awesome so I don't have any other opinion except for: FINAL freakING FILM? :(

yeah, Chris Nolan isn't doing anymore Bat-Movies after this.  I'm assuming another director will take over.

It just sucks he's stepping down. So far, the past two have been very solid. The third should be on the same level as well. I just hope the next director handles it correctly. So much more batman stuff I want to see done in the "darker" way it has been.

They could get Kevin Smith to do it.
