There are reports that it’s not health related so that’s good.

Blames frustration with the transfer portal and NIL:

Can’t blame him. It’s like being an AAU coach now.

College teams need to hire GMs to manage players. It’s too much for coaches to recruit, retain, and coach.

don't some soccer teams do this with a technical director?

What a poop show the Temple basketball program has begun.  Would seem this is connected to point shaving possibilities that surfaced last season.

https://virginiatech.sportswar.com/article/2024/10/23/hysier-miller-released-from-virginia-tech-mens-basketball/

Then the investigation nabbed a transfer in.  Rumor I have seen elsewhere is that he bet on games at St Joes.  But not his own.  Apparently the suspended coach bought lunch for someone.

Not opposed to paying college players but this is obvioulsy a side effect of moe money in their pockets.

How is this still a thing when you can just bring along an alum to pay and call it NIL negotiations

Probably can get the alums to bet for you also!

I don’t know. Maybe more will be reported. But it’s a partial year suspension for both player and coach. The for sure part it is it’s fallout from the FBI investigation of the point shaving. Basically there is always some illegal stuff going on at almost every football and basketball program. They can’t investigate everyone all the time.

Season starts tonight.

UMD hosts Manhattan.
GW hosts Mercyhurst.

Howard visits Kansas.

I did not realize that W&M hired Brian Earl as coach. Played and coached at Princeton and then did a great job at Cornell as head coach. They will play an uptempo version of the Princeton offense. Should help recruiting. They will make the tourney within the next three years.

W&M is essentially the ninth and only public Ivy League school.  They aren't supposed to be good at sports...they're supposed to be good at smarts...and they do a pretty good job with that.

while they are old enough to be an Ivy, Cornell and UPenn I think still have some public connection. Cornell's ag program for sure is state.

This is a fun rabbit hole to go down on wikipedia. UNC is apparently the first public university, Rutgers, the oldest in continuous operation. Pitt is surprisingly old (1770) given how far west it is

W&M bills itself as the 2nd oldest college in the US (behind Harvard) but there are docs that show that it was initially planned well before Harvard. The Wren Building is the oldest academic building in the US, originally constructed in the 1690's though it has been rebuilt several times due to fire. The School did close from 1861-1888 due to the Civil War and post-war recovery challenges.

W&M is one of 15 schools considered a "Public Ivy" (along with UVA, Michigan, Maryland, UCLA, and others). The term was coined in the 1980's to define public schools that offer an educational experience on-par with the Ivy's.

as for UNC, how do they discount William and Mary? Was Wm & M not publicly chartered by legislation?

W&M wasn't public until 1906, UNC was chartered as public

i've put two kids through W&M, i can relay this stuff in my sleep. :)

we were just at Wren last week for graduation pictures before they encase it in scaffolding for repairs. Part of a massive construction project underway at the school right now.
