He has a solid approach at the plate.  If he’s a 15 HR guy with a solid approach and decent OBP with some doubles to boost the slug and above average defense, then he’s a solid starting 3B.
Thats objectively not good enough to be a third baseman on a contending team

Sure, maybe not.  Getting a sure fire 3B of the future on a contender for Harvey wasn’t an option.  Wallace could have career arc like Bohm, another guy who didn’t have big over the fence power early but is settling in as a low 20s HR guy.  This is an excellent return and adds a guy with a floor as org depth with some upside to be a solid starting 3B either for the Nats or as trade bait.

Thats pretty much what he is. He does not have the power to stay at a corner infield spot.
Put him at 2B then.  Or SS.

Doesn’t have the range for SS.  His arm is pretty much wasted at 2B.

Getting the 39th pick also is not insignificant.

Yea, I would have been ok with that as the whole return.

This draft is considered weak.   The extra pool money might allow for taking a shot at a HS kid.  Regardless it's a high pick and pool flexibility.

Relievers who can throw upper 90s are valuable!  Let's see what we get for Finny.

KC is a game out of the last wild card.  I guess they feel they owe their fans a shot after several years of being really bad.

There are a lot of hard throwing RH relievers.  It’s not like Harvey has a long track record of being really good.  Prospect/draft pick returns are lottery tickets, but this is an excellent return on paper.  I’d imagine Finnegan should be valued similarly to Harvey.  He isn’t an expected numbers darling, but his surface numbers and ability to close games are proven.

Apparently Longenhans at Fangraphs is nt so high on Wallace's defense.  Quote from within this article. Hands and range below average.  From 2023.

He’s still a mixed bag at third base. His hands and range are both below average, but he makes some nice plays with effort and athleticism and has enough arm for third. My pre-draft projections had Wallace in right field, but he’s holding his own enough at third to shift his projection.”

Not that consistently throw strikes.  Last year his WHIP was below 1.00 and this year even struggling some its about 1.20.  I believe Harvey has one more year of team control?

He really isnt nimble enough. Thats kind if my point. We got a below average corner infield bat and a below average middle infield defender.

Yes he has one more year.  I’m not saying Harvey has no value, clearly he does.  I’m just thrilled with the return.  What we got back in return just further deepens our system.  Maybe Wallace and/or who we draft at 39 get us back a Harvey or better down the line to help our bullpen when we’re contending.

Not sure how much more you expect in addition to the 39th overall pick for Harvey.  Of course the likeliest outcome is Wallace is a 4A guy or below average to average big leaguer.  James Wood was drafted 62nd overall.  Another high pick is another nice lottery ticket.

I guess Harvey didn't kill his trade value with his June

I thought there was no way he was being traded after his terrible June and one more year of control left. Makes me hopeful that both Finnegan and Thomas will be on the move as well.

Except Mike Rizzo is garbage at drafting

Hopefully Haas will be picking now. Or at least exerting some influence.

His ERA starts with a 4 now. It was a bad series of outings.

Interesting he looked at it from the money pool aspect. He makes the point the Nats can use the added money in their pool for other picks.

By the way, I've been saying that I would miss Harvey when he's gone. I will, but the return is what you could hope for. It's a sign Rizzo will sell, but not cheap
