mlbtr's list of available FA 1st basemen, with ages:

Quote

Jesus Aguilar (34)
Cody Bellinger (28)
Brandon Belt (36)*
Jeimer Candelario (30)*
Ji-Man Choi (33)
Garrett Cooper (33)
C.J. Cron (34)
Rhys Hoskins (31)

Eric Hosmer (34)
Trey Mancini (32)
Wil Myers (33)
Darin Ruf (37)
Carlos Santana (38)*
Dominic Smith (29)
Donovan Solano (36)
Rowdy Tellez (29)
Joey Votto (40)
Jared Walsh (30)
Juan Yepez (26)

bolded the names that interest me assuming they don't break the bank. Cron is an old fav, but I wouldn't go more than a year. I expect Hoskins to be costly. Choi, Cooper, I think would be 1 plus option. Yepez has some control left. Tellez would be strictly to get pop in the lineup. i'd think about a 1 year deal on a pillow basis and give him a chance to show pop and be dealt at the deadline. Urshela could also play 1st, but here he'd play 3rd

If we have Vargas, I dont see a reason to sign Urshella. Just let Kieboom play for three months and then call up House.

I kind of think he's more of a starter at 3rd and can move to 1st or even 2nd after that. If we are willing to just go into a holding pattern for 3-4 months while House or one of the other prospects progress, then you may be right. Either way, Yepez is intriguing. he's only 26 next year.

Next season is a holding pattern

Tbh, I'd like to see what they could buy if they spend $10/20/30 million more AAV than last year.

Probably gonna hit 10+ million through arbitration alone.

Just dont see the point in signing someone to take time away from young players. Lane Thomas is the only one who proved anything last year. Everyone needs to play as much as possible in 2024.

Thomas sucked for the last 3 months of the season. We discussed this ad nauseum last September. House only has one season plus of pro ball and he has done well but I think it is premature to anoint him ready for the show by July.

Thomas was fine in August and September. Guy is a 3+ win player. Meanwhile, no one else could put together more than one decent month.

No reason to sign a utility guy like Urshella to start when you have plenty of options that you may want to actually see about

I guess our definitions for "fine" are different:
               BA     OPS
July        .245   .632
August   .243    .747
Sept       .242   .724

14 HR's for the last 3 months

Same number he hit in the first 3 months. Not seeing a problem here.

July was when they dropped him in the batting order to 2nd. i didn't think he liked the spot, at least initially.

He likes fastballs. You get fastballs in the leadoff spot.

It also didnt help that literally everyone dropped off after July

also, that was CJ's hot month. On the one hand, should see fastballs with a base stealer on, but he probably was taking more to let cj run

Let's sign Vogelbach! He'd fit in just fine with Nats baserunning... :D

Not sure why everyone wants the Nats to pass on big free agents.  I for one would love to get a good bat and arm.  No reason to suck and if you get the right ages they can be ready for a return to competing next year while being more competitive this year.

we absolutely can and should be competitive next year if we upgrade LF, 1B, and SP, especially with Crews likely here soon and House not far behind. I'm expecting Woods at some point next year but not counting on him to produce.

No one here wants the Nats to pass on the pricier free agents.  We just don’t want expect owners to spend big when they are trying to sell the team.

With a couple exceptions, I want to pass on most of them.

I dont see this team truly competing until 2025. Wood, House, and Morales are nowhere near ready (of they ever will be). Still dont know of Gore and Gray can be good enough. Giant question marks across the diamond.

Who are we going to sign now that will be worth that money in 2025 and 2026?

Ohtani - 30 and on his second tommy john. You're paying 500+ million for, maybe, 3 years of decent pitching and a DH. Is he the best DH? Yes. Is he 300 million better than Yordan Alvarez? Nope

Yamamoto - Yes. I give him Gerrit Cole's deal and not even think twice. He's literally the only big free agent I'd be excited about

Snell - 31 with a huge walk problem, which basically makes him a 5 inning guy. You really want to give him 200 million?

Bellinger - Okay, 28. How much stock do you put into this season over the previous three? 200 million dollar gamble.

Montgomery- 31 and totally reliant on location and weak contact. Wont take much of a drop off for him to be a back of the rotation guy.

Chapman - 31 and hasnt posted an OPS over .800 since 2020. Dont really want to get locked up when we have two potential starters at 3B in the next three years.

Gray - 34. You will get, maybe, two good years. And you'll pay for four or five.

JD Martinez - 36 and can still hit. But Im betting he wants to go somewhere to compete. Rizzo will sign him to a one year deal in 2026 and then act surprised when he posts a .678 OPS.

E-Rod - 31 and dude is a head case. Hard freaking pass.

Shōta Imanaga - 30 and 5'10". Like .... I dont see him doing well in MLB

Stroman - 33. Back to back seasons with injury issues. Not a great sign for a 5'7" pitcher with middling stuff.

Hoskins - Probably the only short term candidate. I'd take him, but he's not going to be here when the Nats are competitive.

Candelario - 30 and fell off a cliff after the deadline. And we have viable candidates within a couple seasons. Dont really feel like getting locked up for four or five years.

Everyone else is kind if filler at that point. I'd be interested in Yamamoto and Jung-Hoo Lee, but Rizzo seems allergic to the Asian market.

Which one of these guys are we not talking about like we talked about Werth in 2015?

Josh Hader would be nice. Tell the starters just give me 5 innings. Get existing guy for 6th then Harvey, Finnegan and Hader for 7,8 and 9. Never know when a pitcher might blow out his arm though.
