Smith is the obvious man out, but I suspect he gets a nice couple of months to see if there's any pop in his bat. i don't know if jeimer finishes the season here, either. he may play himself into a trade.

Where do you find RISP as I believe Smith is under.200

Yep, easy choice. Get rid of Smith and Call and use those at bats on someone who deserves them. Alu, Baker, and Kieboom are all waiting. All have more upside than a soft hitting James Looney.
oohhh!  james loney. perfect comparison

Why not drop Smith to the 8th spot or have him lead off if Thomas regresses or goes to the BP? Call is useless as an everyday player. A good defensive 5th OF when Robles returns.

Cus Smith is pretty blah for first base. If you want to keep him and platoon him with Alu, fine. But he isnt the first baseman of the future, and I want to see potential long term pieces at the big leage level.

Dominic Smith has an ISO of .041. Then nearest non-pitcher I could find to that is Pete Gray at .042. Pete only had one hand.

james loney had a 4 year stretch of .088, .131, .090, and .078 isos from age 28 - 31. pretty wild that his xbh power was twice Dom's.

For Keiboom's sake, let him stay down there and rake for awhile.  The guy looks absolutely miserable in a big league uniform.  Let him get comfortable so that when he gets called he doesn't look like he wants to crawl into a hole and hide.

He was born with a crippling affliction known as dumbface.  That isn't going to change.

I'm certain that Kieboom will stay in Rochester until he shows he can hit. After 15 games -- not many -- he is hitting .246. Maybe time to look again when he has played 70 games.

By the way, Darren Baker has been so overmatched that he is hitting .317 with an OPS of about .805.

After a 1-17 stretch to start June he's heating up: 4 for his last 10 with a double

we can slice and dice his season into "ooh, that's good" and "oh, that's :turrible: " Let's see if he can put together a couple months of .800+ OPS. Then I'll think he's due for another shot.  Same with Alu.

wouldn't say he's ripping up the International League, but he's .267 / .373 / .436 over 118 PAs in AAA. good for a 106 wRC+, or 6% above league average in runs created. that compares to a 123 wRC+ in 2019 in Fresno. wRC+ is a legit comparison tool for Fresno and Rochester since both are league adjusted. comparing to 2021, just his AAA numbers, his wRC_ was 113 over 180~ PAs. While his // and per PA numbers were worse in 2021, like the Woody Allen joke, 2023 still has smaller portions (PAs)

Smith is having a hot June, maybe there's hope of trading him, moving Candy to 1st, and seeing what Kieboom can do at 3rd for the rest of the year?

eh, I'd let him bake a lot more in AAA, through July. Hope to get him in the field not DH. By that time, we will have dealt Candy and Smith and will need him or Alu, and possibly Baker for the "Let's go, New Guy!" stage of the season. I'd also not zero out the possibility of him Zimming it over to 1st because that seems to be the hole in system right now.

I agree. Overall he has a pedestrian .797, however there are some underlying indicators that he's doing okay for a guy who missed a full season. 14.9% walk rate and a sub 25% K-rate are good signs

Back to the IL :(

What's the injury?

Ah, left oblique. From MLB.COM:

Quote
une 20: 3B Carter Kieboom (left oblique) to IL
Kieboom was placed on the 7-day injured list on Tuesday, and he will undergo an MRI on his left oblique. He was sidelined all of last season because of Tommy John surgery. Kieboom, who is on the Nationals' 40-man roster, is playing for the Triple-A Red Wings.

"He's worked really hard to get back to where he's at, and he's [had] all these little nagging injuries," manager Dave Martinez said. "Then again, people don't realize how tough it is to play every day this game. It's tough, and when he's not used to doing it for over a year and he comes back and he's playing every day, your body sometimes reacts to it. Hopefully, this is just a minor setback and we can get him back on the field because he's been hitting the ball really well and playing pretty good."

Are you serious? Smith is batting less than .150 with RISP. He has no value. DFA him
