you sort of hate to do that when his position I think is in flux (SS or 2nd or even the OF), but if you end up confident in his bat at the end of the year, then you think about it. If you can sign him to an Albies deal, then go for it and figure out the position later.

And there's the crux of the issue. Would Abrams sign such a deal? He's not worth a Carroll extension yet but he might not want to sign a deal smaller than that like Ruiz did.

eh, explore it at the end of the season. Get more of a look at his performance.  They aren't negotiating mid-season. There's such a range of ways to do these deals. Assuming the bat is real, the position I think will take care of itself over the next 7 or so years, which I assume will be the length of the deal. buy out 5 years of team control and 2 of free agency.

Who knows what CJ's ultimate level ends up being (he's still not in his physical prime obviously;he will get stronger and impact the ball more over the next few seasons), this stretch of play is really encouraging, especially the strides he seems to be making defensively.

Abrams has moved into positive territory with a 1.1 UZR/150 according to Fangraphs. Among NL SS with at least 500 innings this year, he's 8th out of 14 (and only 0.2 behind Tovar). Orlando Arcia is far and away the worst defensive SS in the NL with a UZR/150 of -16.5. Lindor ranks #1 at 9.0
