Maximizing the value in the sale of a business is different than maximizing the value of the operation of a business.

The competitiveness of the team is largely irrelevant, especially given all the work Rizzo has done to improve the farm system (ie, the future of the franchise). The Lerners want to minimize future financial commitments, as they will reduce the value and profit of selling the team. For example, whoever purchases the team will argue (correctly) that Strasburg's contract is a sunk cost and adds no value to the franchise. So when they make an offer, they will, in their heads, deduct the cost of Strasburg's contract from the offer. This is why the Lerners aren't making long term or large financial commitments. Unless those contracts are incredibly favorable to the franchise, they would impact the sale price.

Gotcha, thanks! I believe you also mentioned earlier that the team isn't for sale anymore, how come the Lerners haven't made it official though? I'm guessing that they are still open to offers...?

Dougherty with an update on the sale and how extending rizzo and davey are meant to project stability:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/08/21/nationals-dave-martinez-contract-extension/

However talknats reports that the extensions are based solely on merit

The only paragraph from the article that matters:

"The reasons for the holding pattern are complicated, according to people familiar with the Lerners’ thinking who still cite lingering uncertainty over future television revenue as a remaining roadblock for any buyer. But those people say they still expect the Lerners to sell the team if Leonsis can meet their asking price. The question, then, seems to be how much higher they need him to go — and whether Leonsis, who recently bolstered Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s capital with an investment from the Qatari investment fund, will be willing to go there."

It should surprise no-one that an organization whose most valuable asset is tied up in never ending litigation is impossible to value and sell. The Lerners are stuck with the Nats unless they agree to a ridiculously low valuation which means we're stuck with owners who no longer want to own a team

I don’t think you are bargaining from a position where of strength if you only have one serious bidder. That seems to be the case. The price won’t go up much even if the team performed better.

The problem is the seller may simultaneously decide not to sell and not to invest anything more in the product. That appears to be where we are- ownership is just holding on until the price gets better

It seems like a little PR work from the Lerners would go a long way here.   Make a statement that they are committed to building a winning team regardless of the sale situation, and sign some solid mid range free agents who will be around for 4-5 years and/or extend some guys on the team where it makes sense.

So do the Orioles get sold before the Nats?
Maybe this is really good news for both sides. If Big Teddy AOL won't up his bid because of the MASN debacle, and Davey Rubes has the same issues with the O's, they both could force the Angelos family (maybe with intervention from MLB) to put the dispute to bed once and for all. Then both teams get sold and we can all go on our merry way.
This is one step closer to a new thread called "LAC - Leonsis is cheap".

Maybe. They have a fighting family. Not sure if that improves or decreases the odds.

Once the matriarchs die, both clubs will be sold in short order.

Of course Ted passed away last February and I doubt Peter knows what's going on. It's Mark's and Peter's wife and kids game now.

You'd think that with both teams up for sale that would create a powerful incentive to settle the litigation but apparently not.

I'm not sure there is any pressure on Baltimore to settle. They can sit on the money, delay, file appeals, and eventually pay up. They will still own the TV rights to a baseball team in Washington.

If the new buyer is financing the team, they need a valuation which seems impossible until MASN is settled

Good point, but we know they're not paying into the revenue share pool in spite of low TV revenue, so a good portion of the team's value must be tied up in the willingness of DC area fans to pay $$$ for tix and concessions.

Strange things are going on these days in the Baltimore/Washing sports.

- Washington finally got rid of Dan Snyder.
- The Redskins are going to have a new GM and head coach after the present football season ends.
- The DMV jurisdictions will be bidding to build a new Redskins stadium.
- The Caps and Wizards are trying to move to Virginia.
- The Orioles are about to sign a 30 year lease to stay in Baltimore.
- The Orioles are reportedly in negotiations to sell their team to a dude who was born in Baltimore and lives in Bethesda.
- The O's are not fussing over what MASN pays the Nats after years of fighting about it.
- There's speculation if the O's do get sold MLB won't approve the sale without dissolving the MASN deal.
- The Nats are for sale and Ted Leonsis is reportedly trying to buy them.
- There is speculation if Ted can't buy the Nats he would at least try to purchase MASN.

German potato salad? You eat that, and pretty soon you want to merge with Wiener Schnitzel and take over Pilsner Urquell.
