Another decent start
I said this for a while, but he had a nice run from 4/16 - 6/30 last year, too.  That's part of what's maddening about him.  He's seemed  close to putting it together several times.

I posted sometime last year that there seemed to be several stretches where it looked like he'd turned a corner, only to regress yet again. It is maddening.

For what it's worth, Davey did what many had been calling for him to do, and did not leave Corbin in too long (he was three batters into the third time through the order). And then our bullpen did what it does.

Grant Paulson notes:
Quote
Patrick Corbin's 2.37 ERA over his last 3 starts has some thinking he's turned a corner.

This is his best 3-start run since he posted a 0.86 ERA from June to July in 2019. Didn't have a run like this in '20 or '21. Just two three-start stretches at 2.37 or better in 2019.

Corbin stats 4-16-21 to 6-30-21

2.5 months of 4.01 ERA last year.

If he turned into a couple who could pitch 175 innings with an ERA on right side of 4.50, the contract would still be bad but it would be such a relief for the franchise to at least be able to him him in back of the rotation.

A bit worried this is an illusion, but it feels like there may for some reason be something there with Riley Adams.

Corbin is definitely one of the worst signings for this club in team history. By far. 140 million for some relief pitching in the World Series. That’s it.

And all of the 2019 season. That season got us into the playoffs

$140 million for one season is a bit much.

Which teams wouldn't pay 140 millionfor a WS?

Given 2019, I'm not mad about the signing at all. I do hope the team gets good again soon, though.

Davey praised him after the game for giving the team some length when they needed it.  4.1 IP?

13 whole outs!  David Wells would still be shaking off the hangover and might be mostly warmed up by then!

you're missing the point - Davey was bull penning the game, so getting 4.1 innings out of his opener was great :)

I think Davey was just finding anything positive to say to the press.

Here's what blew me away in Corbin's latest debacle -
He had a full count on the hitter when play was interrupted by the replay of the foul ball off the nub of the bat that was originally ruled a hbp. At that point he's only down 2 runs and there were 2 strikes and 2 outs. I'm thinking no way does he throw anything but a slider here...So what does he do? He twirls a center cut fastball up there belt high that gets totally crushed and now it's 4-0. Go figure.

Corbin will keep starting this season because someone has to pitch.

But I wonder about next season. Let’s say Strasburg comes back and is even average and Cade Cavalli comes up and is solid.

That means they have Strasburg, Gray, and Cavalli. I’m bullish on Adon since he is so young and was rushed. I have to think they sign at least one starter. That’s five arms right there. And that doesn’t count if Cole Henry keeps dealing or if Theophile, Irvin, or Parker pops.

I don’t think any of our young pitchers right now profile as stars. But they all have potential to be solid rotation arms. And I’d rather watch someone like Adon or Evan Lee develop than Corbin soak up innings.

I’ll be really disappointed if Corbin is starting next season. He should be a long arm in the pen. The money is spent. Don’t compound it by holding back other arms.

I've given up trying to find any rhyme or reason in his pitch sequencing.  I don't think he trusts any of his pitches right now, which may be part of that, but watching his starts makes no sense. I'm no pitching savant, but usually I can watch 2 innings or so and at least understand what a dude is trying to do.  With him it's a mystery.

I don’t know as much about pitching but a two to one strikeout to walk ratio seems unsustainable for a MLB pitcher.  Seems he should just get pitches over the plate and hope they get hit at someone. No confidence probably as you say. I mean he is worse this year than a soft tosser like Espino was last year.

I'm trying to summon the intestinal fortitude required to watch Corbin today. Not easy, especially given the fact he's pitching in hitter friendly GABP. This could get extra ugly.
