Remember when I suggested we trade Harper in the offseason and some of you guys scoffed at the suggestion saying no team would give up anything for Harper for a one year rental?

Well the Dodgers are about to trade top OF prospect Yusniel Diaz to Baltimore for 50 games of Manny Machado.

If we lose Harper and dont get anything in return it will really hurt this franchise.

Difference is Baltimore isn’t going to try and resign or extend Manny. Nats want Harper to stay.

Shortstop more valuable that outfield bat. Machado hitting 100 points better than Harper. Machado has 3.8 WAR and a wRC+ of 156. Harper has 1.3 WAR and a wRC+ of 119. They are not even close to equal value at this point.

So Bryce was worth twice as many wins as Machado last year. But Harper was still an outfielder and Machado was still a SS. The Tigers got nothing for JD Martinez, for instance. And why would you have traded Harper in the off-season when you were pushing for a WS. The Nats would have been evsicerated in all corners (except for a few of WNFF). It’s a move that made zero baseball sense.

Harper’s comp is Martinez. The Tigers got very, very little for him. Dodgers are overpaying because they desperately need a shortstop.

Harper also just trashed his knee and was coming of a miserable month of September and a poor showing in the postseason. I'd have been surprised if the Nationals could have gotten the equivalent of what Yelich got.

And honestly, none of the names mentioned in Machado rumors are top prospects.

I've come around on this.  Offer Bryce a fair contract, don't go overboard, see if he is serious about wanting to stay, and then if he re-signs put him at 1B.   I would have said trade Robles, but that leaves us with 3 lefties in the OF.  I'm not trading Soto, so I guess you could also move him to 1B.
