On the way back from Reading today, we stopped at the fireworks place just north of the Mason Dixon line. Saw a young man in a Nats' jersey and we talked about the game. He had been to Hershey Park and told me about Hawpah hittin' one today. Neither one of us had seen the game but we knew the result. Told me it was number 19. We (Nats' fans) are everywhere.

The whole season can be summed up by the ninth inning. Harper busts his ass to get to second and is LOB at game's end.

Depends how you look at it. He jogged halfway to first before deciding he could make it to second, then "busted his ass" to get there.

Harper has more walks in his career than Ian Desmond in a little more than half as many PAs.

Harper: 203 BB in 1,730 PA

Desmond: 199 BB in 3,399 PA

Was at Yankee Stadium last night for the "Desmond Debacle" game.

- after stretching and just before the National Anthem, Harper walked to the rail and signed baseballs and programs for kids. I think I heard applause when he was announced

- when Harper hit his home run, the Yankee fan sitting next to me turned and said, "Wow! He's a terrific ballplayer."

The "fans" at Shea II and other NL East parks might dislike Harper, but the rest of the world seems to be lear ning that he's a decent kid and a fine player.

I think the "fans" outside of the NL East know the game for the most part ... and maybe Philadelphia. Mets fans are self absorbed. Atlanta fans are bandwagoneers. The Miami "fan" doesn't have any idea what's goin' on.

No.

There were chants, but only from The Bleacher Creatures, who always begin a game by chanting the name of each Yankee starting player. Player waves a glove to them. Otherwise, no chanting.

Some reporter for the Washington Post claims the same Bleacher Creatures were chanting "20 -19". If they were, it was so softly that we could not hear it, directly opposite, in the grandstand above third base. Michael Kay, incidentally, is the Yankee announcer who, in 2001, said, "Oh, Al-fon-zo Sorrr-i-ano!! Every day this young man does something to make you smile, and sometimes laugh right out loud". Soriano also had a habit of swinging at every pitch down the middle but up at the level of his cap. Missed every time.

When a Post reporter quotes Michael Kay, it's like quoting the Party Line from old Pravda. "The glorious worker's paradise of the Soviet Union will assuredly place a cosmonaut on the Moon by 1965 and Mars by 1975!" I can imagine Shirley Povich reaching down to say, "Sources, kid. Didn't you learn by now? Never trust a drunk or a blatherskite."
