BAZOING! That's silly money.

It's smart money. You have a $200M payroll and only one proven arm in the bullpen. They lost to the Rangers because of bullpen meltdowns in games 3 and 4. In Craps it's all covering your bets.

Weird structure.  Tyler Kepner says he can opt out after 1 year for $11.5MM, 2 years for $21.5MM, or fulfill the whole 3 years for $35MM.  I guess if you anticipate Mo going 2 more years, than Soriano can opt out if he thinks he can get > $13.5MM.  Still seems like a lot of leverage for Soriano.

It also makes him impossible to trade.

Thome stays with the Twins. Are they putting crack in the Gatorade or something? Seriously, spending 6 months in MN doesn't sound very appealing.

Wow. So much for refusing to give up that first round pick. I'm shocked the Yankees got Soriano. Didn't expect it, even though most analysts thought it was a strong possibility. Best 1-2 punch in the history of baseball? Soriano and Rivera = scary. Imagine those two plus the Philthies rotation. 130-140 wins?

Sad how soon they forget; MacDougal and Villone

MLB.com- Grant Balfour signs with the A's now Oakland needs to trade for Homer Bailey.

OAKLAND -- A Major League source confirmed Friday that the A's and right-handed reliever Grant Balfour have agreed on a two-year deal with a club option for 2013, pending a physical.

The A's have not announced the deal and won't do so until the physical is complete, though the Associated Press reported that Balfour is set to earn $3.75 million in 2011 and $4 million in 2012. His club option for 2013 is worth $4.5 million and includes a $350,000 buyout.

They broke this down on MLB Network. It's unbelievable. What a fantastic organization.

I'm surprised other teams aren't hiring away people out of their FO/Scouting with raises and salary increases.

Poaching for Type B's might go the way of the dodo after the next CBA.

Jonah Keri has a book out on TB, "The Extra 2%", which studies their techniques.  The subtitle mentions how they have brought wall street analytics to baseball.  I have not read it yet, but it sounds very interesting organization profile.  That's also where Keri picks up their nickname for the Red Sox, the "Just as Evil Empire."  I can live with that.

Yeah, I was reading a blurb about that book as well. I want to give it a look, but my book queue is a little out of control.

Can you elaborate?

There was a trade made for a guy (pretty sure to the Jays) just to offer him arbitration and have him decline. I feel like the Rays are collecting picks, but the players hate Type A compensation because it makes them harder to sign. After the next CBA, I wouldn't be shocked if compensation went away entirely.

I could see it getting changed for relievers or the formula tweaked, but I doubt small market teams give it up. If you're going to be the Yankee's farm system, you might as well get something in return

While TB and Toronto played the compensation game well this year, one of the problems with the system is that it has tended to benefit the wealthier teams that don't have to fear offering a Type A arbitration and having the player accept.  While TB has done well this year, so have the Just as Evil Empire.  Even after signing a Type A, they end up #19, #26, #36, #40, and possibly another supplemental before #60 if someone signs FLop.  Rich teams can always offer arb, but a team like the Diamondbacks or Padres have to think hard.

Papelbon agrees to $12MM for his final arbitration year.  Essentially, Soriano / Nathan money.

He always strikes me as kind of a dingleberry.
