So do the Cards blow up the club now, trade Pujols, decline options on Wainwright and Carpenter, and rebuild, or are they now more motivated to keep Pujols?

Why would they decline Wainwright's options?

even at $9MM for next year, that still might be attractive depending on the extent of the injury.

Cards really can't blow the thing up. Holliday is signed.  Rasmus is cheap.  If Albert were to leave, they would have money to get a short term backfill like Pena. They still have arms. I don't know the system.

Yeah, I really don't see how you say "Let's call the whole thing off" when you've got Garcia, Rasmus, and Holliday locked in for a few years. The problem is Wainwright becomes a comeback gamble for next year - more like JZimm than typical Wainwright. The real pain is $20m to Lohse and Westbrook: if they could invest the $20m in two better free agent pitchers in coming years, that would be a huge boost. The system has enough talent to supply #4-5 starters and Dave Duncan is still there.

^ Wow that's dumb. I hope some kid sitting in front of you screams Zimmerman, Strasburg and Harper for an entire 9 innings.  :?

:lmao: :lmao: I had no idea that was why hammonds hated Theriot.

I think that's more of a reason to hate stupid, screaming kids at baseball games (or their parents), but that's just me.

Exactly. There's probably a man in his 50's somewhere in Baltimore right now who still hates Jeffrey Hammonds because 20 years ago some obnoxious kid yelled HAMMONDS! for an entire extra inning game (including the 7th inning stretch).   ;)

As a result of finishing 2nd in the Cy Young award, Wainwright's contract guarantees him the 2012 option ($9 million), IF and only IF he is off the DL when the season ends.

Ugh.

Matt Garza got roughed up yesterday.  I hope for the sake of the sanity of Cubs fans that he has a decent year.  They gave up more for him than the Brewers gave up for Greinke.

this is why it is better to trade with Dayton Moore than Andrew Friedman.

You wonder if they play poker at the GM meetings?  How many of the GMs line up to be at Dayton Moore's table?  Do you think Cashman just shows up with a big pile of cash and tries to intimidate everyone?

The Mets are done

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/de_perate_mets_in_new_relief_pitch_3Sp88YVWEvp3QZH8q8HwtO

Quote
The cash-starved Mets are desperately seeking a new loan -- totaling tens of millions of dollars -- to cover their basic operating expenses, The Post has learned
JPMorgan Chase -- which led the banks that loaned the team about $430 million last year -- is trying to recruit other institutions to join a syndicate to put together a new loan that would tide the Mets over until they sell a minority stake in the ballclub.

...

Earlier this month, The Post revealed that the banks had been selling off some of that debt at a discount -- about 90 cents on the dollar -- to lower their exposure to the Mets.
However, JPMorgan may be willing to offer a new loan to help the team avoid defaulting on the existing debt, which would force the bank to compete with other creditors to recoup money

It's his first appearance in Spring Training.

It's a bit early to hit the panic button.

Confused why anyone would help the Wilpons at this point, including MLB. MLB is leaning on JPMorgan to provide the loan? Wouldn't it be better to force them to sell majority ownership and get new owners in? Who would want a minor stake in a business run by those crooks/morons?

Here's an article on the D'backs and their GM trying to change the culture of losing (and strikeouts and a terrible bulllpen).  A lot of that could have been said about the Nats, too.  Hopefully this year will be better than last year in terms of shedding the 'loser' mentality and they keep improving into 2012, as well.

As much as baseball-reference.com and fangraphs discounts it, I still think character is an important factor in a team's success.  Don't know how much of a factor, but it's still important.

It's a little late to redo the schedules to accomodate 29 teams.  The Mets have to meet payroll, or the whole league's going to have serious issues.

MLB could do more to nudge the Wilpons towards selling the team.

They absolutely demolished the Expos/Nats organization in an effort to pare down its payroll and other obligations.  Why are they giving the Mutts money in order to pay Oliver Perez?
