I saw that earlier, debated posting it on here. It's an interesting stance, once I'm not sure has any shot at all working out for a team that wants to dream of a championship in their lifetime. It *can* happen, yeah. But we've got the greatest pitcher from the draft in MLB history in Strasburg, and look at everyone saying how bad our SP is. Even adding Strasburg into that mix, it's just one out of five extra starts. You need to sign FA SPs more than any other spot. You can draft and develop any position you want over five years or so. But SP? You can draft ten, six might top out as quality relievers, two or three AAAA or #4-5 guys, and if you're lucky one 2-3. If you hit the lottery you might have that one ace. But developing two ace SPers through the draft, including a lights out dominant #1? that **** just doesn't happen. The odds of getting one are ridiculous.

Going back to Strasburg, look how that's turning out so far. The most definitive sure thing for an ace SP since... Ever. Few starts, gone for a couple years. We all know he'll return to form, but likewise, there's a good chance he never gets back what he once had. McFail is a moron for totally dismissing signing a FA ace. Ask the Phillies in a few months just how awful it is to sign FA SP aces. This sounds like a team just admitting out of the gate that they do no plan to have a quality #1 ace under this FO unless they hit the lottery, and that the fan base should expect the results that come as a result of not having a #1 Opening Day SP.

Btw, first post on page 100. This thread is definitely long in the tooth.

Teams build rotations without signing free agent aces all the time. Tampa, Toronto, Oakland, Detroit, Florida, Cincinnati, Colorado, and San Diego have all built good rotations without signing a free agent ace.

How many rings do all those teams collectively have in the last decade?  1?

Yep, Florida in 2003. Penny, Pavano, Beckett and DTrain.

Homegrown, with the exception of Pavano who was acquired in a trade.

Still doesn't do much to support your implied argument.  1 ring in 80 team-seasons?  Stan (or whoever people like to blame) would be proud.

Other than Detroit and Colorado, the franchises mentioned have been managed by braindead gerbils until only very recently. There was much more wrong with those franchises than just their rotations.

Well, okay, let's play that game.
2010 Giants: Lincecum (draft), Cain (draft), Sanchez (draft), Bumgarner (draft), Zito (FA)
2009 Yankees: CC (FA), Burnett (FA), Pettitte (draft), Kennedy/Hughes/Joba (draft), CMW (amateur FA)
2008 Phillies: Hamels (draft), Myers (draft), Moyer (FA), Blanton (trade)
2007 Red Sox: Beckett (trade), Schilling (trade), Matsuzaka (FA), Lester (draft), Wakefield (minor league FA)

If you leave out the Yankees, the World Series winning Free Agent Four is Barry Zito, Jamie Moyer, Dice-K, and Tim Wakefield.

houston I think you may have inferred too much from my post.  Does anyone seriously doubt that acquiring Halladay and Lee was the right move for the Phillies given the position their franchise is in? (aka heading into the crapter in a few years, must win now)

Just trying to point out that universally ascribing to any one school of thought and dismissing all others out of hand is a guaranteed recipe for failure, or at least unsustainable success.  How is Tampa predicted to fare this year?  3rd?  maybe 2nd?  Smart drafting alone is a lightning-in-a-bottle strategy.  It's the beginning of sustainable success, but definitely not the whole formula.

It's okay, it's bound to happen when a guy with no other agenda than being a devil's advocate posts anything of substance amongst an agenda-laden crowd ;)

(not meaning you specifically, just in general)

Oh, but see that makes perfect sense. Draft smart, trade smart, international smart, once you see a window opening, sign every free agent you need to get through it. That sounds like what The Plan is supposed to be on paper.

Uh oh.

Quote from: rotoworld
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday that Adam Wainwright is going back to St. Louis to have the ligament in his right elbow examined.

And it doesn't sound good. Mozeliak believes it is "a significant injury." We're not going to speculate for now, but losing Wainwright for a significant period of time would obviously be a tremendous blow to the Cardinals and fantasy owners alike. The 29-year-old right-hander has eclipsed 230 innings in each of the past two seasons.

that is AWFUL news for wainwright ... just awful.  i don't wish that on anyone - not even phillies players (maybe utley/victorinio/howard/romero and then youkilis...no, really i wouldn't) - i hope it's just a sore arm or something.

This actually hurts the Nats chances of signing Pujols.

Most likely, the Cardinals will fall out of contention quickly... from there, they'll trade Pujols to a team that I'm sure will demand an extension before trading for him.

I doubt the Nats have enough, or are willing to give away enough to get him in a trade.

i've made it a point to draft Wainwright in fantasy for the last couple of seasons, IMHO he's the most underrated pitcher out there, every bit as good as the big names (Halladay, Lincecum, etc.) but rarely gets mentioned alongside them.  Sigh...

that i did ... he showed something ... theRIOT didn't.  it all stems from that punk 8 year old in front of me yelling theroit for 5 entire innings when the nats swept the cubs years ago ... that punk.

^ Wow that's dumb. I hope some kid sitting in front of you screams Zimmerman, Strasburg and Harper for an entire 9 innings.  :?

Just imagine if the Nats had picked him up on waivers and had him in the fold LF/CF :bang:

Same with DeJesus... who we could have gotten for Stammen.

A Werth/Ross/DeJesus/Morse/Bernadina/Morgan OF would look pretty good.
