Heymann said that last night, too.  Are they going to defer signing until April to avoid having it count against the lux tax limit?

Are you insinuating that the Red Sox ownership is cheap?

I just watched the Red Sox presser and Theo said that the extension hadn't been signed.  I guess Theo's a media hack.

Peralta+Clippard would have done it.

Not at all. The snakes wanted young pitchers that were under team control for many, many years.

Ok, then Storen and Carr.

And Billy Beane makes even less sense to me this offseason.  The A's post the winning bid for Hisashi Iwukama and then can't reach a contract deal with him?  WTF?

Jim Tracy collapsed at the meetings this morning.

Taken to the hospital.

Wow, that's awful about Tracy. Maybe its something about age + higher altitudes, and not having grown up/lived there? I recall their GM, at barely middle age, dropped dead earlier this year when the Rockies were in town. Hopefully he fares better.

It's not that big a deal, since they get their bid money back. Maybe they'll sign Beltre now.

It's still odd.  How many other teams have ponied up the bid money and then not gotten a contract done?

They were blocking the Rangers, never had any intent of signing him.

Very. None to my knowledge.

They were blocking the Rangers, never had any intent of signing him.

Really? If so that's amazing.

Beane gaming the system.  It's a stupid system anyway, maybe now the Japanese will figure that out.

Why do you think it's a stupid system?

Teams get most of the money, very little left over for the players.    :whip:

Not at all. The players in Japan are team control for a total of 10 years. The US teams are simply buying the right to negotiate with the player.

Correct.  That's why the team collects all the $, the player gets screwed.

No more so than in the US. Did Adrian Gonzalez have any say in where he was traded?

Yes, he could veto being traded to the Nippon Ham Fighters.

Not if he didn't have a contract. The contract is what prevents that just as in the Japanese Leagues.
