In good news, Choo is most likely exempt from military service.
In sad news, no one brought any Charleston Chews into the office after Halloween.

Pirates DFA'd Delwyn Young, Zach Duke, and Andy LaRoche. Not exactly Matt Capps.

Duke would be worth a flyer.

I have a Zach Duke autographed cap, so I approve!

Duke is a bad pitcher nowadays. The average opponent had a .881 OPS against him. To put that into perspective, Evan Longoria has a career .881 OPS. The average hitter looked like Evan Longoria vs. Zach Duke last year.

So Collins is the new Mets manager, which I assume most know by now.

I was looking up on Wikipedia to familiarize myself with him, and came across a bizarre factoid. His last job with the Angels, he resigned. Apparently had the support if ownership, it was known injuries and talent were the problem and not him. So why dis he resign? Because apparently most of the players had made a petition to the GM to get him fired. So, umm, huh? You never hear of a manager with FO support who the players make a freaking petition to get fired. Does anyone know what their beef was with him? I find it interesting this is a universally heralded choice when his entire roster apparently turned on him, and badly so, in his last managerial job, which was over a decade ago. Then again, I know zero about him, so maybe it was a bizarre confluence of events.

I'm terribly disappointed that DeMarlo Hale isn't getting one of these managerial chances. Hale was a fine AA and AAA manager in the Red Sox and Rangers orgs, a great third base coach (that phrase is so rare it seems like an oxymoron), and a good outfield coach, too.  He won MOY for all of the minors in 1999 with Trenton per BA, Sporting News, and USAToday.  I can see maybe a team not giving him a shot a decade ago because he was <40, but I'm surprised that he has not landed a spot this year with so many openings.  He never made the majors, but that has not stopped some very successful coaches like LaRussa and Weaver.

I'm sure we'll have an opening at some point next season, you can root for him to get the job then

Bobby Valentine is an awful analyst.  Somebody should snap up firebobbyvalentine.com fast, which, I'm surprised, is available.

Manny Delcarmen got non-tendered. Remember when the Red Sox wanted us to trade for him?

Just heard on the radio that the Red Sox put in a 2 year offer (didn't hear the dollar figure) on Rivera and were perpared to non-tender Papelbon.  That would have been crazy if that had happened.

Rivera turned it down to re-sign with NY though, right?

This morning on XM they were saying 3 year offer, but that he was going to sign back with the Yankees for 2 x $15m.

3 year with a higher AAV.  They would not have non-tendered Paps.  they would have given him an offer and looked to trade him or hold him for compensation next year.  General consensus in the home town is this.

So...why in the world did Billy Beane trade for Edwin Encarnacion and then non-tender him?  I have no idea what's going on in Oakland this offseason.

They've probably got a deal in place to bring him back for less than he would get in arbitration, something I hope we've done with CMW.

Heymann said that last night, too.  Are they going to defer signing until April to avoid having it count against the lux tax limit?
