Perhaps, but he's yet to really show he can contribute consistently at the big league level. It's be great if he's able to set up and take that 5th outfielder spot, but if he doesn't, you need to have someone ready to go. We've got a lot of young, unproven guys waiting in the wings, having that extra depth there is good. I don't think both Harris and Winn will be on the roster, but we'll have a huge battle for that 5th spot.

that's hilarious. a 5th OFer is not even relevant.

I'd look for Bernadina to make the roster in that role. We have plenty of guys including him, Maxwell, and Harris who will give us all the outfield depth we need.

When I think you can't show any greater lack of basic understanding of sports, you continue to prove me wrong. A 5th OF, especially one who can be a defensive replacement for a poor defender like Hammer, can be an essential part of a team. Add in the idea that Winn, Harris or Owens would all be better at stealing bases than Hammer/Dukes and now you've got pinch runner and defensive replacement taken care of while your better young players get to play every day working on their overall game.

Every spot on the 40 man roster is important. Only someone lacking all comprehension of how sports work would think otherwise.

SF - in the NL, teams use 5 and sometimes 6 OFs on a 25 man if one is a swing guy like Harris, Casto, or Orr. I'm with you on Bernardina for that role, though. I see the 4th slot as likely to be Harris (or Winn, if DPM is right). That player will get 400 ABs (+/- 50), while the 5th spot is a guy who gives you a few particular skills your roster does not have in abundance, like speed and defense. That last slot might be a scramble between Bernardina, Owens, and perhaps JMax, who would give you some PH pop. I'm still dumb enough to hope JMax can figure things out in AAA and become a Mike Cameron type (high K, great defense, good pop, OK OBP).

If Winn is brought in, then I think it shows they are more worried about Dukes keeping his job than they are concerned about a defensive complement to Willingham. I agree with DPM that this would make Harris a good trade chip. I don't see a need for both, though.

SF- as an aside, do you do most of your posts by hand held device (text or crackberry)? I've always guessed that some of your shorter and more caustic remarks are due to not being able to type out much to explain your view. That's why I don't get to hyper about the tone and don't snipe back.

I'm pretty sure he has an iPhone. If he's like me, he makes a good many of his posts from it.

While I've been on the Capps over MacDougal bandwagon, there are a couple of things that give me pause. One is HR/9. Capps has been almost 1 HR/9 more than MacDougal 3 out of the past 5 years. I also worry about a fly ball pitcher. While Mac is no longer a big K guy, he is an extreme groundball pitcher, and if he's not giving up HRs, it takes multiple grounders going through to score the guys he walks. Finally, there are the persistent stories about Capps dealing with arm injuries. I'd still bite the bullet and try to sign him, but it is less clear cut than I thought.

Matt Capps seemed to be pretty Nats-happy when he spoke to the Washington press, and Cubs-happy when he spoke to theirs. Hopefully he chooses the guaranteed closer job over the guaranteed setup/7th inning job.

I'd also very much like to get Kiko Calero. I yammered on last offseason about how we needed him, and we still do.

Everything I'm seeing leads me to the conclusion BID (Bowden is Dumb) and not LAC. They are getting the players the team needs and paying them fair contracts.

Of course, even a little improvement from Capps would help- the Nationals posted a bullpen ERA of 5.09 last season.
