2010 Offseason Wheeling and Dealing
« on: December 04, 2009, 12:58:07 pm »
I thought we could use this as a catch-all thread for Nats off-season wire discussions.

here's a start:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/nationals-notes-hardy-needs.html

Quote
   * The Nats discussed a deal for shortstop J.J. Hardy, before he was traded to the Twins.  However, with Ian Desmond and Cristian Guzman the projected starters, upgrading in the middle infield is not the top priority.
    * Manager Jim Riggleman says starting pitching comes first, with Sheinin suggesting trades are preferred over free agent signings. You can see our list of starting pitcher trade candidates here.
    * The Nationals also seek a catcher, more than just a backup type according to Riggleman.

I would love to get a pitcher via trade like Nolasco or Vasquez. Do it to it Riggs!

Zaun is signing somewhere today per MLB rumors, with the Brewers, Rockies, Rays, or Mariners as likely destinations.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals are interested in Adam Dunn as a LF replacement for Matt Holliday.

In what would be a sadly cheap move, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Padres are likely to non-tender starter Kevin Correia if he doesn't agree to another discounted contract by Saturday's deadline.  Correia ended up making $1.1MM this year and provided the Padres with 33 starts and a 3.91 ERA, 6.5 K/9, and 2.9 BB/9.  He'll do fine on the open market if the Padres are really this cheap.

GO FOR IT.

Correia seems like a good option.  Last year was his first as a pro over 110 IP, and he'll be 30 next year, but his peripherals all show up as a RHP version of Lannan.  He could probably be had for a decent price.  Double his pay from last year and add incentives for starts and IP and see if he'll bite.

Padres fan Twitter says Correia might (rumor) want $4m - he is definitely worth 3 and probably of more use than Smoltz.

William Ladson (as he calls himself on Twitter) thinks we are interested in Brad Ausmus. Yikes!

Speculation that the size of the Cardinals' offer to Brad Penny means they are not going to bid on John Smoltz. Apparently Penny's deal is done and waiting on a physical. I would guess that, for better or for worse, Smoltz is one of us in 36 hours.

Mike Rizzo said #Nats are interested in Jon Garland, and Willingham would only be moved if a team blows them away. Closer job is open.

I take that to mean we probably won't get Garland and Willingham isn't going anywhere.

I'd be perfectly happy with Garland, Smoltz a lefty reliever and catcher off of the FA wire.

I would like to acquire one more starter besides garland, and sign smoltz as a reliever. Closer maybe, even. Remember, smoltz WAS an elite closer for like 2 or 3 seasons at one point before he went back to starting. He could probably hold the closer spot warm for Storen.

Smotlz bombed out as a RP last year.

I think he can only handle starting at his advanced age.

I'd be shocked if we hadn't at least touched base. Maybe Rizzo prefers a stronger clubhouse presence?

Seriously, we don't find out about things with this team until they happen.  Who had any idea about Pudge?
