I'd definitely take a chance on Sheets.

Sheets is asking for something like $12 million a year. He's not going to get it, of course, and it may take a couple weeks or months for him to realize this. I would actually offer something like $2m guaranteed and $3-4m more in incentives (say, $3m for winning 10, $500k for every September and October start?) plus one or two years of options.

I think if he goes for a low value contract, he'll go to a contender

I would too but as houston said he's asking a lot.  He won't get it, but I can't see us shelling out that kinda money (and no that's not an insult to the Nats, that's a lot of dough for someone that hasn't pitched since '08).  He does have talent though.

Apparently, the Braves are softening their stance on Derek Lowe.  Originally they were asking for power bats, now they are saying they'll make a deal so they can get some money back for a FA or two.  (http://twitter.com/jaysonst)  Would you want him?

Harden to Texas. One year, $7.5 million with an $11.5 million option.

freak.  now i'm getting pissed we missed out on wolf and harden.

2 years/18 mil for harden would've been a nice starting offer i think.

The Nats have yet to make a substantial move.

We signed/traded for two secondary players.

This is not nearly enough.

It sounds like they are content with Guzman/Desmond/Orr in the middle infield so I would not expect the Nats to do anything on that front.

I can't imagine them doing much more than getting a starter and reliever.

Nats and Mets in the hunt for Jason Marquis.

What kind of offer would you start with JM?

pass. he is from NY so he'll probably sign with the Mets. He would fit in with that team perfectly.

$10,000 per inning for first 200 inning and $20,000 for every inning over that.

Win: $50,000 bonus
Quality Start: $25,000
If a blown save occurs and he's winning - $30,000

That's probably not allowable under the current CBA,but it should be.

The Cardinals have interest in Nationals first baseman Adam Dunn, but there is nothing is serious regarding trade talks.

For Dunn to leave Washington, the Nats have to be overwhelmed with a trade offer.

I can't imagine any scenario where they deal Dunn.

That would be dumb if we did that... maybe they should give us Wainwright

Where would the Cardinals play Dunn?

Who would play 1B for the Nats? What would we get in return?

bring the numbers down, and add it to the minimum salary, and that could work.

it would be interesting if all contracts in baseball involved the minimum base, and what was negotiated was the bonuses (like guys like a-rod would get better bonuses obv)

Damn. Rizzo is targeting guys I feel like are not good fits for the Nats.

Marquis wasn't even part of the post season rotation for the Rockies. He flamed out after the all-star break and he's just a very average to below average pitcher.

Kasten said when they hired Rizzo that he was a huge stats type GM. Marquis had an ERA .51 runs less than his career average in 2009.

He strikes out 2 batters less per 9 innings than the average pitcher and he's right at league average in terms of walks.

The second half of last year Marquis went 4-7 with a 4.56 ERA, that's his level. The Nats can, and should do better.

And if Rizzo was such a stats guy... I think he'd see that and target guys that he can maximize their value while minimizing their monetary value.
