That's the same roster from last year with Bruney, Smoltz, and Pudge.  You really think that's something to be impressed with?  I don't want to hear about Flores because he'll be broken within 6 weeks and even if he isn't, offense isn't our problem.
If those guys play to their potential, yes.

Detwiler is going to make an impact this season.

Unless a legit #2-3 (which on the Nats would be the unquestionable ace) signs with the team... I really don't see anything changing.

There aren't any of those available.  Lackey is gone.  Garland/Marquis/Washburn ain't gonna get it done.

Why?
Because he is a Major League pitcher and has the stuff and make-up to succeed up here.

I'm positive Piniero is one of those guys.

In 10 years he's won 87 games.

Baseball-reference.com has him winning 12 games a year on average if he manages to stay healthy for an entire season - he's made 30 starts/season 3 times in 10 years.

On what are you basing your belief?

What my main point is, is this... its great that we have faith that these guys will some day blossom into legit starters at the major league level... and you can afford to waste one maybe even two spots in the rotation on 'hope' guys... but when your rotation is made up of Lannan and four 'hope' guys, you're just asking for trouble.

Really?  I think the roster looks markedly different from the one that got us off to a 26-61 start.
2008 Opening Day roster:
Rotation:
John Lannan - LHP
Scott Olsen - LHP
Daniel Cabrera - RHP
Shairon Martis - RHP

Bullpen:
Joel Hanrahan - CL
Joe Beimel - SU
Mike Hinckley - LHP
Wil Ledezma - LHP

Saul Rivera - RHP
Steven Shell - RHP
Julian Tavarez - RHP

Catchers:
Jesus Flores
Wil Nieves
Josh Bard

Infield:
Ryan Zimmerman - 3B
Cristian Guzman - SS
Ronnie Belliard - 2B
Nick Johnson - 1B
Willie Harris
Alberto Gonzalez
(DL) Anderson Hernandez

Outfield:
Adam Dunn - LF
Lastings Milledge - CF
Austin Kearns - RF

Josh Willingham
Elijah Dukes

Aren't you using the same rationale to justify why the Nats should pick up Piniero?

I'm not.

But Ben Sheets is still out there.  We should be making a huge push to get him.

I agree that they need to sign Garland. That would be big.

We'll never know what Detwiler or anyone else has unless we give them the chance.

good point. Our bullpen (Joel Hanrahan) absolutely killed us last season more than people remember.

Stabilizing the pen will help tremendously.

Which is why its so puzzling that you are so against bringing in Matt Capps, a proven, all-star RP.

I don't think he's that good but the Nats need to bring in at least one or two more proven guys to pitch out of the pen.

I don't get how Capps can be asking for 2 years and a ton of money considering he was terrible last year for the lowly Pirates.

If you take elite closers out of the discussion, then "proven guys to pitch out of the pen" don't exist.  Julian Tavarez  was widely regarded as a "proven guy to pitch out of the pen."  Those are the types of guys you get when you're not talking about Rivera, Papelbon, Nathan, K-Rod, et al.

It's not like he's had 10 years worth of success. Yes, he had some good seasons and then in his most recent season he flopped. You can't just ignore that like it didn't happen. Was there a reason for his poor performance this past season? Is he likely to repeat it or was it just a fluke?

These are the things you have to look at. Yes, he may rebound. But he also could duplicate last season and pitch poorly again. You don't know what you are getting here and that is why I don't understand how he can demand 2 years and a hefty salary.

Unless we can somehow get Dave Duncan, Piniero will turn back into Piniero.

I said IF they all realize their potential, then you have roster with the perfect mix of homegrown players, trades, and FA's.

That's all I meant.
