Here's my predictions:

Jon Garland signed at 3 years, 20 million.
John Smoltz signed at 1 year, 5 million.

Rotation:

1. Lannan
2. Garland
3. Smoltz
4. Detwiler
5. Stammen

I'd say that's a pretty accurate description of what I think will happen except I would change only one thing:

Here's my predictions:

John Smoltz signed at 1 year, 5 million.

Rotation:

1. Lannan
2. Garland
3. Smoltz
4. Detwiler
5. Stammen Balester

Fixed.

I also hold out hope that they'll actually attempt to address the middle infield but it appears to be way off the radar.

They've got to want to move Guz.  The Dodgers just moved Juan Pierre and are covering half of his salary, close to $9 mil.  I think we could cover half or maybe a bit more of Guz's to get him outta here.

I just think that Balester will start out in AAA and take a starting spot when someone (probably Smoltz) gets injured.

Agreed on the MI part, but don't see it happening.

Where does this come from?  MI was one of the things Rizz and Kasten said they wanted to address.  Rizzo said this at the winter meetings:
Quote
In the search for a 2B or SS, Rizzo now sees the signing/acquisition of a 2B as being more likely, especially with free agents Adam Everett and Bobby Crosby off the market. "I think there's certainly more second baseman available of interest than there are shortstops of interest," Rizzo said.

I still think we'll see this addressed before we get to ST.  They're not done yet.  They know that.

And by "they're not done yet," we mean "they've just gotten started." Don't scare sportsfan too much ;)

The team could have signed Adam Everett on the cheap and had a rock solid SS in the fold for next year... move Desmond over to 2B and then worry about trading Guz... but the Nats dragged their feet and now Everett and Crosby are gone.

Everett is worse than Pete Orr in terms of overall skills, in my opinion.

Everett might be the best defensive SS in the game.

I said OVERALL skills. He hits like a little boy.

Desmond has already opened eyes around the NL. This guy will be more than a complementary piece. He and Zim should get friendly, they'll be together a long time. I don't see Lannan going anywhere either.

I think you are right about your rotation, Minty! I also wanted to address the "  Some Bloggers that think they have inside info" comment. Even if some do have inside comments they would be foolish to let too much out. That could jeopardize their sources and even a player's confindence in them. If you know what I mean! Those who might know a little bit more than most, will try and let things out if there is a wrong perception on a player or a situation. That keeps everyone on the same page with informed comments. I personally want WNFF posters to be the best and most accurately informed Posters out there.  Merry Christmas! Spinman

:D

Imagine if we get Stammen, Balester, Lannan, Desmond, and Zim all on the 25 man kicking butt. That's one hell of a homegrown team! Flores from the rule 5, Hammer and Bruney and Clippard by trade - and Pudge, Smoltz, and Dunn signed to fill in the gaps. That's a major league squad built the right way, but a pretty big IF.

I know Stammen has been working hard this off season. Balester is getting stronger every day and Lannan and Clippard are being great mentors to all the pitchers. If we can stay away from injuries and give these young arms some time we will have a Playoff caliber team in a few years. Trust me these guys are sick of losing! I think the young guys need to start leading on this team. Once that transition is made the Vets will get inspired and the team will start winning. St is going to be something to watch.

The bet expires when the regular season begins.  Besides, this avatar is rather humorous.

That's the same roster from last year with Bruney, Smoltz, and Pudge.  You really think that's something to be impressed with?  I don't want to hear about Flores because he'll be broken within 6 weeks and even if he isn't, offense isn't our problem.

I'm on a 9.5 month economy imposed vacation, so what else is there to do besides

a) Job hunt
b) play on sports forums (Saints, Caps, Scottish football, Nats, bigsoccer)
c) Drink water (a lot)
d) urinate (a lot)
e) eat apples, peanuts, lunch
f) More job hunting

yeah, so I'm on the forum just hoping for breaking news.

You were comparing Everett to Pete Orr.  Pete Orr also hits like a little boy - the difference is at least Adam Everett is a superior fielder.

I'm not saying that we should've gone out and picked up Adam Everett, I'm just saying he's better than Pete Orr.  And actaully, now that I think about it, Everett would've been a decent pickup if he or Desmond would play 2B...

Ding... Ding.... Ding.

I can't believe people are optimistic about this pitching staff... as if just because everyone got a year older it means they all got a lot better. I'm not buying it. As far as I can see, the only proven player the Nats have on the starting staff is Lannan. I'll hold that stance until one of the young guys actually can put a solid YEAR together.

Unless a legit #2-3 (which on the Nats would be the unquestionable ace) signs with the team... I really don't see anything changing.
