No one really knows anything and those with power (presumably ESPN) are spewing drivel to try and manipulate a "more desired" outcome.
Until the presser is announced, I still think this is true.

From Chico's blog:

One Nationals spokesman I just talked to said that, as far as he knows, the Nats have no plans for an announcement today regarding Teixeira.

Didn't we say this about a week ago too, the last time the Red Sox "were close?"

I'm a Nats fan, I can accept disappointment.
I'll keep my hopes up until he is signed with the Sox

Really any other team than the Sawx.  We knew this all along, but still as sportsfan says, why does it have to be those bastards.

but who else is out there?  we're looking for a slugger.  or do you want another season of relying on nick johnson - cough cough - i meant kory casto and ronnie belliard as our everyday first basemen?

You tell me, you invest 15m or so in Dunn, do we have a lot of money to go after a Holliday or Bay or someone else next year? Probably not. Is it worth waiting a year or two, until there is a superstar worth paying 15m or more. I'd have to say so, it's not like Dunn is changing this ball club this year or even next, and it if takes us out of signing another big hitter then it's not worth it. There's a reason there's not much interest in Dunn, and there are a couple of desperate clubs who missed out on Teix, who are competiting for it this year, need that last piece. Evens some of those clubs are looking at Burrell first ahead of Dunn. They don't care if they overpay 4-5m on a player if they are going for it all this year. That's not our position.

Wait a minute, why would someone from the Washington Times have the inside track on what the "Boston Red Sox" are doing?

good so we'll be last in runs again and settle for another season with 100+ losses in an empty stadium.  nice.

not saying adam dunn will draw millions and millions of fans and will take us to the world series, but he'll definitely help us get better.

Geez. At least most of us here are pretty realistic about our chances.

Not only do they think they're going to get him, but they all seem to think the O's have hatched this elaborate possum-playing scheme to throw the entire baseball-watching world for a loop. When the master plan is complete, the O's will have Tex and will have hoodwinked the entire country! Brilliant!

It's funny, though, to watch as some of them come around to reality. "Uh, gee guys, maybe we don't have a 'wow' offer sitting in our back pocket after all. I'm thinking maybe we're really NOT factors in this."

Everyone expects the Red Sox, so what is stopping them from just coming out and saying it?
I think we have a 50/50 shot. I just don't believe the O's are in this.

The Nats can't go hard after Tex, not get him and then do nothing -- that would be a disaster -- I'm fine with Dunn as a plan B and it doesn't necessarily preclude them from go after other top tier FA's next year -- however, the most significant move they can make next year is to sign Strasburg

The only possum-playing scheme the O's have is the one Angelos is pulling on the team's own fans. The scheme has played out for 12 seasons in a brilliant bit of villainy.

:'( To players not as good as Teixeira.

This is going to be a horrible Christmas.

I think someone needs to readjust his priorities.  :?

ESPNEWS is flashing on the bottom

Red Sox or NATIONALS likely destination for Teixeira

It is so nice to see us mentioned with the all mighty Red Sox

You must be lying because ESPN hates the Nationals.

who do you think should be more crushed:

orioles fans because they made a laughable offer and they have wanted the hometown kid for 7 years now.

or

nationals fans because we were this close in to getting him.

O's fans. At least we were in the running from the end. We made our best offer but at this point we just aren't an attractive place for prime time free agents.

Neither. Both groups should move on and try to find other ways to improve the team. However, freak orioles fans (no offense hammondsnats). All I care about is that the Lerners use the money they were "willing" to spend on Teixeira to sign some players to improve the roster so we don't freaking lose more than we win again in '09!

Overtime, I think the O's.

Nats fans will be crushed because, holy crap, we made it to the finish line, but we just missed out if we don't get him. It will sting for a few days, but ultimately common sense will prevail and we'll realize we really gave it a go.

O's fans will be crushed and just remain that way, knowing really nothing was done for them.

I hope that money is not spent on Dunn. Waste of money. Same with Hudson.
