Which was 15 yards, the length of sentence or the penalty?

Newer members dropping the Lodson
I'm far from new. I was posting on the other board since before the Nats first game at RFK.
I'm newer here though.

Tomterp knows me pretty well. I'm sure there are a few others too.

I enjoy your posts. Saw you joined in July. If Lodson has spread to the MLB board, then we've really done well

You feel comfortable with Anderson Hernandez and Belliard?

Yes I do, and also I'm very wary of Hudson's lack of durability.  He's been on the DL every season, and the dislocated wrist is a serious injury.

If you ever need NF4VR to come runnin', just post something about Juan Pierre.  He must have his blackberry programmed to send him a link to any thread that includes that text string.

Report: Nationals increase offer for Teixeira

According to MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) Online's Roch Kubatko, the Nationals "have sweetened their proposal to Teixeira, offering him an eight-year deal worth $178-184m" according to multiple sources. Kubatko has been told Washington is willing to go nine years and there's been talk of a 10-year offer.

SI.com's Jon Heyman wrote Monday night that "things appear to be heating up in the Mark Teixeira talks, and baseball people believe now that Teixeira will have a new team before Christmas."

Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner told Newsday Monday the Yankees have no offers on the table to either Teixeira or Manny Ramirez. He did not rule out making an offer to either player but said, "There've been no offers made [since last week's news conference]." According to the New York Post, Cashman refused to comment on whether the Yankees plan on extending an offer to Teixeira or Ramirez or both.

If we can take Sunday's development at face value, it appears the Angels have dropped out of the hunt for free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. The Angels confirmed to the Globe an earlier report by Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the team has withdrawn its offer to Teixeira. "We have indeed withdrawn our offer and ceased negotiations," Angels spokesman Tim Mead said in an e-mail.

The news is reminiscent of Red Sox owner John Henry's proclamation late Thursday night that Boston was "not going to be a factor" for Teixeira after hearing other offers. However, an unnamed source close to the talks reportedly told Rosenthal that the Angels' decision is more final than Boston's.

Angels GM Tony Reagins confirmed last week the club had an eight-year deal on the table for Teixeira, speculated to be worth around $160 million. Unnamed sources close to the process told Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown that Angels owner Arte Moreno thought Teixeira had no intention of returning to the Angels and that his team was being used to drive up the price.

ESPN's Buster Olney wrote on Monday that Red Sox are still in the driver's seat to sign Teixeira. "Teixeira is going to wind up with a really great contract, a deal that could take care of his family for generations to come, a deal that he earned through his diligent preparation and his strong performance in his career," Olney writes. "But clearly, he is getting boxed in -- and circumstances will probably make it necessary for him to make a decision very soon, because his leverage has probably maxed out, and now only runs the risk of being diminished."

The Nationals, Orioles, and Red Sox have made offers to Teixeira, and the Yankees could be in the hunt as well, depending on who you believe. According to Olney, the Yankees made an initial offer that was believed to be markedly less than what the other offers have been, and since then, they have withdrawn that offer.

Olney wrote on Sunday that he spoke with someone who talked to a member of the Nationals' front office. The word is that the Nationals "absolutely do not expect to win the bidding for Teixeira." Washing reportedly made an eight-year, $160 million offer. According to Olney, the Orioles made a seven-year, $140 million offer -- not $150 million, as widely reported, but $140 million -- and have not upgraded that offer.

The Boston Herald reported Saturday that the Red Sox have been unwilling to budge on an eight-year offer for roughly $170 million, the Nationals reportedly have checked in at eight years and $160 million, while the Orioles were last reported to be at seven years and $150 million.

So where do the Red Sox currently stand? Despite Henry's declaration, the Red Sox are still considered to be very much in the hunt. An unnamed source told Yahoo's Tim Brown the Red Sox have not spoken to agent Scott Boras since Thursday night. Sources around baseball analyzed Sox owner John Henry's "we are not going to be a factor" e-mail from Thursday night as a strategic ploy rather than a sign that the Sox are out of it. "I still believe the Red Sox have the best offer on the table," one general manager involved with Teixeira told the Globe on Friday. "I think this is a negotiating ploy." The "ploy" by Henry may have been in response to a "ploy" by Teixeira's agent Scott Boras, who could be drumming up offers as a negotiating tool. Sources told the Globe that the "other offers" might not exist, contrived by Boras to hike the Red Sox offer. Those offers, of course, real or otherwise, are expected to come from the Angels, Nationals, and Orioles.

Following Henry's e-mail Thursday night, the story started getting juicy again on Friday. According to a report by Peter Gammons and Buster Olney on ESPN.com late Friday afternoon, the Red Sox are likely to remain formidable players in the pursuit of the slugging first baseman, despite owner John Henry's e-mailed comments late Thursday night indicating the Red Sox were out of the running. According to the ESPN.com report, "Red Sox executives flew to Texas on Thursday believing they were close enough in negotiations to complete a deal with . . . Teixeira. But after they arrived, they were informed that their offer to Teixeira -- something in the range of $165 million to $170 million -- was short by upwards of $20 million. With that, the Red Sox stepped away from the negotiating table." (Boras denied to ESPN.com later in the day that the difference between the two sides had anything to do with economic considerations).

This kinda stuff pisses me off. I'm not mad at writers or pundits who say this, because it's true! I'm mad that the Lerners have driven this franchise so far underground that it's going to take years to bring them back to respectability. We're paying a huge price because they sat on their hands the past 2 offseasons and were content to dumpster dive for talent.

I'm glad that they didn't waste money last year on the likes of Andruw Jones or Torii Hunter. Last year was not the best year to be spending money on free agents.

Olney and Gammons remind me of two chickens running around squawking, hoping that someone will hear them.

Gammons: That Theo Epstein is absolutely dreamy!

Olney: Snap out of it Gammons...we've got to keep reporting that the Sox are gonna sign Tex until it actually happens. Then we'll look like geniuses.

Buck Martinez was asked where he thought Tex would end up.  His answer?  The ORIOLES.  He said he doesn't base it on anything other than a gut thought.

Makes sense, too.  Perhaps the Nats and the Red Sox are being used, Tex wants to play in Baltimore and Boras is holding out to see if he can squeeze any more money out of The Pig.

Good god, I hope he's right and this thing does end today. If he does go to the Sawx, at least we can move on to signing other players.

It was Tim Lempke (??).

He said there are "strong indications" the Sawx were going to sign Tex, but didn't mention any of these indications.

As I've said before, it's no secret we're going to have to make him an offer well above the Red Sox.  $5 million more isn't going to do it.

8 yr/$188

In fact we're probably going to have to go more than 8 years.  Maybe 9yr/$197 - 10yr/$205 million get it done 8)

If Tex goes to the Sox after what we offered, we can't blame the FO for this.

Isn't this about the sixth or seventh time we have heard this same story. He is going to pull a Brett Favre and hold a press confrence to announce that his decision is coming soon.

Ya well at least we made the Sox pay more for him. It's going to be the Sox, just because we're pretty much offering the same amount from all rumors. At least we tried right and we were there until the end. I just hope we don't waste the money on Dunn, I would hate our 1 superstar to be a guy like him.

but who else is out there?  we're looking for a slugger.  or do you want another season of relying on nick johnson - cough cough - i meant kory casto and ronnie belliard as our everyday first basemen?
