Caught "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest" today.  The last half hour actually had me trying to warn a character about what was potentially going to happen out loud it was so intense.  Love the series and I just hope the Daniel Craig/Rooney Mara Hollywood version isn't a complete waste.

Sure.

I'm in.

I'd do naughty things to Natalie Portman. Especially at 1:28 of the trailer.

Ali, watch both the 2 and 4 hr cuts of Dune before you judge (they come on 1 DVD).

Good topic.

Slaughterhouse 5
The Great Escape
Original Planet of the Apes
To Kill A Mockingbird
Solaris
A Scanner Darkly
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Man on Earth/I Am Legend

off the top of my head. A lot of those I saw the movie first, which helps, because I refuse to watch Blade Runner having read the book first.

I would add Being There to the list. Maybe because I like Peter Sellers maybe because it was the only Jerzy Kosinski book I ever read that didn't make me want to commit suicide.

I'd definitely do naughty things with Natalie Portman. Also, Zooey Deschanel. Also, my naughty misadventures would be so good they'd require their own trailers.

Got back from a midnight screening of HP. Excellent, best in the series so far. Extremely dark as you'd expect. Of course, it really hurt not having it be a single film. You knew it was going to end where it did, but when it did, you just sat there thinking "now I have to wait eight months?"

Got to see a free preview screening of the new Narnia flick.  Nearly as good as the first and a nice bounce back from the last one.

Good call.  I guess he did in himself in the end.  Reading The Painted Bird was like having your nails pulled out.

Enjoyed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this weekend. I gotta say, having read the books first really dulled the impact of the movie a bit.  it was still really good though.

gonna sit though the Rapunzel movie with my daughter next week, then gonna see Yogi Bear and Tron.

Really? Yogi Bear? I realize you mentioned a daughter, so it likely isn't your choice. But seeing the previews, it looked like just about the worst movie I've heard of. Not quite Battlefield Earth bad, but it looked really, really awful. Then I saw Dan Akroyd was Yogi, and thought that's the best they could get? I love Akroyd, don't get me wrong. But his career has been in the crapper for twenty years. These animated movies, they can always draw huge stars.

Then I saw who was voicing Boo-Boo. Justin freaking Timberlake. I rarely chastise a film before it's even released, but this looks like a cosmic joke. And not a funny ha-ha joke.

It's just another "Garfield."

That was actually the film I was thinking of mentioning in place of Battlefield Earth, but I realized it hasn't been hated as much over time and Bill Murray is Bill Murray. When Garfield came out, people were saying it was one of the worst films ever. Never watched it, so I don't know if that was hyperbole then or people have just forgotten about it now, and Bill Murray was attached to it, so it's "untouchable" in the holier than thou film geek land. Point being, comparing it with Garfield, my original "looks like one of the worst films" is reaffirmed.

I saw Garfield on a bus in Puerto Rico, with bootleg Spanish subtitles. It wasn't that bad, but the mistranslations were as funny as the jokes in the movie.

I saw Garfield II: A Tale of Two Kitties. I actually enjoyed it, if you'd believe that. I was seeing it with a bunch of kids I was summer camp counselor of, and I enjoyed being in the air conditioning for once. But also, Bill Murray and Billy Connolly were hilarious voice actors. Billy Connolly had the attitude of "I am totally wasting my time in this movie, so I might as well have a really good time," so he was just totally ridiculous and over-the-top the whole time doing this I'm Completely Bonkers! routine. I laughed.

So...I went to add Tron to my Netflix list and amazingly enough it's not available.  A little digging and it looks like Disney has pulled all copies and the DVD is out of print.  Doesn't seem like the best marketing idea leading into the 30 years later sequel.

I'll still go see it but now I have to watch the damned thing on Youtube or mess around with torrents which I don't trust at all.

Remember, Disney is the group of morons that brought us the timeless "Disney Vault"!!! Their scam is they only release films every seven years, for about a year a time. So look for the last Tron release, add seven years, and thats how long you have to wait.

Its one of the biggest scams ever. I should be able to go I to the store at any time and pick up a copy of my childhood classic Aladdin. Instead, Disney figures people will buy Disney DVDs in bulk because they know they can't purchase them 85% of the time. It's really ridicule, ous and frustrating, luckily I've never found myself wanting to buy a Disney DVD I didn't get when it was released. If I had, I'm sure I would have had a stroke over the stupidity behind this policy by now.

The last Tron release was 2002.  This one is "delayed" until 2011 so they can package the 2 films on Blu-Ray.

Wow, I figured it was due to the seven year ban. That makes zero sense, you're right. Sell it now to get the sales of a new movie coming out, then release a deluxe edition packaged with the new film. It isn't surprising from a company with the seven year policy, but I hope they realize how badly they are missing sales. People wanting to watch the old film, last released on DVD when most didn't own a DVD player versus selling it as a two-pack after all the hype has died down. Never mind its been eight years since it was last released, bypassing any excuse of their ridiculous "Disney Vault", indeed, making this decision even more absurd. Which version sells more copies in the next 365 days? Idiots. You wonder how these corporations stay in business making boneheaded decisions like this.

Yet another company that, due to its own stupidity, is driving people to pirate their product.

Maybe they want people to remember Tron as a great cult classic instead of watching it and realizing that if you take out the laughable special effects all that is left is a terrible story

For 2010 it's a terrible story.  For 1982 it was groundbreaking and bordering on genius at a time when computers were still an untapped medium.  As for the special effects, once again there's that little side note of it being filmed in 1982.  Context should still matter.

I agree, but when I watch it now, it is 2010 and in 2010 it's a little funny
