Gotta be honest, Astros winning it in 6 would probably be about the worst case scenario for the Nationals.

to be the best you have to beat the best!  Cole walked 5 and was beatble in his last game. 5 more feet and that warning track fly ball wins the game for Yankees. let's embrace the challenge!

The point here is having been on WNFF earlier really has no meaning or value.  It's like saying "I learned Algebra before you did".
After one hits the 100,000 post mark, maybe it should roll over to zero.

Reminds me of the Braves in the late 1990s, particularly 1996 -- they have Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, and they've won recently. Valid points, but they then got matched many times on the starting pitching side, and the opponents didn't play their way out of it but produced, especially late.

Reminds me of when Clemmons and Pettite were miraculously defying age in Houston

No time to rely totally on our starting pitching and have our bats cool off (which has been known to happen). Hitters need to be aggressive and swing early in the count against Cole and Verlander. You know, with Altuve and others, that will be their M.O. against Max and, especially, Strasburg.

That could work out to our advantage. Max and Stras have honed their craft more than people think. Of course they want to get ahead in the count, but they aren't going to groove fastballs right down the middle. Aggressive hitters can make it real easy for pitchers.

So it’s official, we’re going to get crushed.  :hang:

Yeah, but what were our odds of getting to the World Series before we played the Wild Card game?  Probably around 10%.

Astros are the biggest favorites since 2007

I don't mind the team with the best overall record and with recent postseason success being the favorite. However, they got pushed to an elimination game against Tyler Glasnow by dropping games in that homefield buzz known as the Trop. They also were close to losing the first two games at home and being pushed to an elimination game against a team with one pitching issue after another, as shown by stating Chad Green in an elimination game.

The Nats get a DH when they go on the road, and they take a bat out of the usual Astros lineup at home when they play in the elements outside of their roofed facility. Plus, the part of the Nats that needed rest -- the starters -- got it. As long as they maintain the stay in the fight attitude, they can get it done.

The series really is reminding me of the 1996 series with the defending champ Braves (Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, Avery) against the Yankees. After a first game rainout, the Braves took the first two 12-1 and 4-0. The Yankees -- who could grind out at-bats -- went into Atlanta without a break, and took the next four, including some real pitchers duels to close it out. If we want some history of facing a vaunted staff with hardware, there's a good one.

Find a way to win four, one at a time.

https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/27745071/mattress-mack-places-35-million-bet-astros-win-world-series

Quote
A Houston furniture salesman, attempting to mitigate millions of dollars in potential refunds from a promotion, placed one of the largest bets ever taken by a U.S. bookmaker on Tuesday at a Mississippi sportsbook.

Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture in Houston, bet $3.5 million on the Houston Astros to win the World Series at the DraftKings sportsbook at Scarlet Pearl casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. At +220 odds, the wager would pay a net $7.7 million if the Astros win the World Series.

McIngvale wired the $3.5 million to the Scarlet Pearl on Monday and flew from Houston to Biloxi. He said Tuesday that the betting slip was in his pocket and joked that he'd probably keep it in his wallet, "which is secured by a bunch of rubber bands."

On Thursday, McIngvale was in New Jersey to place another large wager on the Astros to win it all. He bet $1.5 million at the same +220 odds at the FanDuel Sportsbook at The Meadowlands. The wager would win $3.3 million and is believed to be the largest legal online wager in the state's brief sports betting history.

McIngvale also recently placed a $200,000 World Series bet on the Astros +250 at the South Point in Las Vegas and has additional wagers for undisclosed amounts with Nevada bookmakers Caesars, MGM, Treasure Island and Circa Sports. He's shopping around for more, too.

McIngvale's $3.5 million wager at the Scarlet Pearl is nearly equal to how much was bet on baseball at Mississippi sportsbooks in June, July and August combined.

If you get 2.2 times your bet plus your bet back when you bet on the big favorite, what do you get when you bet on the underdog?  Does he really net $7.7MM on a +220 line?

Seems like Game 1 is critical.  If we beat Cole, the rest of the Astros rotation behind him looks beatable.

Mattress Mack is good guy. I hope he loses this bet

Yeah he seems like a really good guy. I didn't wanna keep posting tidbits from the article since its pretty long but:

Quote
McIngvale, 68, is a beloved figure in Houston. He opened his furniture store to those in need during flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey and says he always roots for the Astros regardless of his position.

He declined to characterize how big of a liability he has on this year's promotion.

Gallery Furniture's liability from the promotion surpassed $15 million this week and was still growing, McIngvale said.

"I know these wacky promotions like this one, when people get their money back, it's the greatest publicity I could ever hope for," McIngvale said

He's just hedging his promotion of refunding all mattresses sold this year over $3000 if the Astros win it all. Which is actually kind of a smart business decision. If he takes the loss, it might be worth it as an advertisement/marketing expense. If he wins, he covers his promotion liability (or at least a good chunk of).

But still:

Splitting Games 1 and 2 is critical. This is why I believe that Davey should manage those games like he did the NLDS. Corbin should be available out of the pen for an inning in Game 1, Sanchez in Game 2. You really cannot count on Scherzer and Strasburg getting through 7 innings against the Astros lineup. If you get a lead after the 5th in one of those games, you have to manage it like we did the NLDS. The Astros offense is far too explosive to trust the game to some combination of Elias/Rainey/Rodney for 2 innings.
