The Yankees have a culture of success and "rules" and (help me) playin' the game the right way and rings and a culture  ....   We don't.    Werth had a big impact on setting the tone in the locker room.    Not sure we have that "leadership" now either in the clubhouse, front office or from our history.        I think we agree more than not.

Yeah, obviously the Yankees have the history and organization culture but we have to start somewhere. I think, from the top, we lack an organizational identity. We swap out managers every couple years but the same players remain and we make exceptions for guys like Harper and Zimmerman whenever we can, we trade away most prospects for veterans so no one comes up in the system together, etc...

How many guys on our roster played in the minors together? Michael A Taylor & Difo? Taylor & Harper? Kieboom and Severino? Soto has with our depth guys but for, like, 2 months.

Agree again.    It has to come from the clubhouse.    One of the media gabbers was goin' on about "Who are the leaders on this team?"    I'm still thinkin' about it.    I believe Eaton wants the job.    I think Murph is the crazy uncle.    Even for all Zimm's upside, I don't see him as a leader and Harper?     Nah.    Rendon?    Turner?     Max wants the job but he only plays every five days.    I don't know.          Appears everybody else is too new to the team or too young  ....

Ownership on down is kissing Bryce's ass hoping he'll re-sign. I think that freaks up a clubhouse as much as anything

how much of that eagerness to bring Harper back is based on marketing?

OT      Who was the QB for the 'skin's who always went to Snyder   ...   RGIII?

Griffin but he's not the only one that has done that. Portis and Bruce Smith were also known to pull that crap, which tells you that Snyder is the problem.

That's just players making excuses.

Precisely.

Perhaps the Yankee players are adults.

This. And Harper knows it.

Most of it.

actually, yeah, I think this is basically what much of the atmosphere has evolved to with this team...  and, that is so utterly pathetic.  on the 'hope' that they could ruin the franchise by paying that pud anything near the amount that is expected.

There were more Aaron Boone doubters.  Who knew that announcing was a better prep for than a bench coach for being a good manager.

We diddled.

“We are delighted to bring Dave aboard and excited about what he will bring to our clubhouse and our dugout,” Nationals managing principal owner Ted Lerner said in a statement. “We have been very clear about our goals as an organization and we feel confident we’ve found the right man to help us reach them.”

“I am excited to bring Dave into our family,”  Rizzo said. “As we went through this process it became clear the type of manager we were looking for — someone who is progressive, someone who can connect with and communicate well with our players, and someone who embraces the analytical side of the game. We came away from the process feeling like there was absolutely no one better suited — who matched up to what this organization needs right now — than Dave.”

The reader comments are interesting in the mirror.

This one is good, and I don't disagree with it:

Quote
Dusty needed to have not been hired in the first place, but given that he was, and given that the team turned in its two best seasons yet, after the Bud Black and Jim Riggleman fiascos, having the shortest average manager tenure in all of baseball, firing Baker after 2 seasons is so foolish, so self-destructive and reflects so poorly on the organization. It is utterly astonishing to me.

I don't agree that Dusty shouldn't have been hired to begin with, but the rest of that is spot on.

They can say the players like Martinez all they want but if anybody doesn't think there's a problem in the clubhouse then they are just kidding themselves.

I'm sure the Martinez lovers will still defend him.

That's how I remember it.  Cora was coveted but it's not like he was about to turn down a sweet job with the Red Sox for less money.

There were more Aaron Boone doubters.  Who knew that announcing was a better prep for than a bench coach for being a good manager.

They were pretty misguided, too.  First of all, it's not inconceivable that even a mediocre manager could do well with a team as loaded as the Yanks.  Even still, predicting who will or won't be a good ML manager is far from an exact science, so people acting like they know anything about someone who's never managed at the ML level are full of it.  Acta had a good resume and was highly recommended; he turned out to be absolute garbage.  On the other hand, you have crazy stories of guys like Jack McKeon and Ned Yost falling into world championships entirely against the odds.  MLB manager hires are about as predictable as NFL kickers, so it's best to just wait-and-see.

Whether we're stuck with him for the full three years or not, one fact remains: Martinez is soooooooooooo inarticulate. He reminds me of someone who passed out at a table in a pub after a lengthy drinking session, who is then awakened suddenly by someone passing by and who immediately starts groping for words, any words, however incoherent the resulting utterance may be. His post-match pressers are practically unlistenable.

This. I am pretty sure this is why he was passed over for so many jobs. I can’t imagine he interviews well.

Except in this case, it was immediately clear that Martinez was unable to express a coherent thought.
