Selecting Martinez as the replacement is on Rizzo, how can you interview this guy and not realize he's not capable of doing the job?

Rizzo was projecting Maddon goin' in.    He wasn't "interviewing" dave.

I suspect they had a deal in place with Martinez before they fired Baker.

Freudian slip for a man your age?

Nope. Freudian slip would be Audrey Hepburn because I'm starting to forget Grace Kelley and what's a Freudian slip anyway?

Can someone reconstruct how much each of the bullpen pitchers had been used recently?  A little foresight might have suggested Madson was gassed, but were Kelley and Kintzler available?  how many days in a row had those 3 and Solis pitched?  Would anyone have gone straight to Grace or even Cole with a clean inning?

                              Tuesday              Monday         Sunday         Saturday       Friday
Kintzler                   1.0 IP 27 P         1.0  10           1.0 11                               1.0 14
Madson                   1.0 IP 21            1.0  11                                1.0 23
Doolittle                  1.0 IP 10                                  1.0 22           1.0 14
Solis                       0.2 IP 12                                   0.1 6                               1.1 19
Grace                                                1.0 20
Kelley                                                0.1 6              0.2  9
Cole                                                  1.0 21

But Audrey and Hepburn pitch for the Rays.

an unintentional error regarded as revealing subconscious feelings

So the culprit is Tuesday night. I think this game was decided when Gio couldn't go 6 the night before...

When your starting pitcher has pitched 7 solid innings, in last night's case, of 2 hit ball, and your bullpen is used and shaky, why not let the starter pitch the 8th inning, even though he's thrown 103 pitches. Is it going to really hurt the starter to go out there for the 8th?

This is a very good point. That being said, at the time, I had no problem taking out Tanner.

In that scenario, if Roark comes out for the 8th and gives up a couple of base runners people are nagging that Martinez didn't go to Madson.

                              Tuesday              Monday         Sunday         Saturday       Friday
Kintzler                   1.0 IP 27 P         1.0  10           1.0 11                               1.0 14
Madson                   1.0 IP 21            1.0  11                                1.0 23
Doolittle                  1.0 IP 10                                  1.0 22           1.0 14
Solis                       0.2 IP 12                                   0.1 6                               1.1 19
Grace                                                1.0 20
Kelley                                                0.1 6              0.2  9
Cole                                                  1.0 21
that seems to scream out Solis or Kelley.  Kintzler unavailable even if he says he can give you something.  I can maybe see holding Doo back to the 9th.  Kelley probably, with Solis and maybe Madson if there's trouble.  Or, Solis, with Kelley and straight to Doo if there's trouble is better.

yes he did hire 1 good manager Dusty look at his record ffs
he did one of the best managing jobs I have ever seen last year
when he had no bp for half a year and key injuries
you can nitpick any manager the cubs manager in the playoffs made some serious mistakes

it is not that they replaced dusty but they replaced him with a certifiable moron
most of the players are not morons they know a bs-er when they see one

pitching him last night when he was absolutely gassed was ridiculous I mean any bushleague manager any fan any player knows you don't do that
this guy just isn't that bright - the camel stunt is the act of someone who has nothing to offer

I don't think that can reasonably be an explanation for 9 runs given up in the 8th inning.

Another brilliant job by rookie manager Davey Martinez last night.  He gave the team the confidence and analytical tools to hit Kershaw last night. This team has been owned by Kershaw under the prior managers. They showed the heart and grit against Kershaw last night that they have lacked in prior years.

It's truly amazing that Davey has this team at .500 given that 3 of the 4 best hitters have been out for extended times. Even Larry King was astonished last night.

We’ve won four out of six. Best manager ever, at least until we start losing again.

Decided this was not tongue in cheek but sincere, right? Valid point. Managing with crucial injuries is no picnic, and wasn't last year. He's done well to break even--except, er, they weren't all injured at the start when we won four straight. Still, done good with the big three out, and last night atoned for busting Madson in NY. Nobody's perfect. Too much blame or praise centers on manglers. Pitching is still 75% of the outcome.

Just about everything I post is tongue in cheek. Just trying to balance out the posts that blame every bad thing on the manager with one that gives him all the credit when things go well.

I'm assuming Davey using Madson against the Mets in the eight was use your best in the big games as opposed to using somebody like Solis in a big game.

Remember when the clubhouse turned against Williams during the second half of his second season? Martinez is losing them in the second half of his first April. Strasburg and now Gonzo have publicly complained about Martinez's decisions. Equally troubling is Martinez calling out Difo for a bad play after giving Harper a pass the night before. Stars will get star treatment but the secondary players will notice and they won't like it.

I don't have any expectation for improvement from Davey, he's not going to last. Rizzo might as well start scouting prospective top ten draft picks.

So which veteran manager will replace Dave (assuming we continue the pattern)?  LaRusa?
