I like the idea of Soto playing 1B. We don't seem to have anyone available in that pipeline.
The Nats haven't had a true power hitting prospect other than Harper in a while. Skole is honestly the only prospect I can think of over the past decade who profiled to be a first base bat. Maybe Chris Marrero?

I wouldn't mind his bat in left as he gets coached up. I think he stays primarily in left until Zimmerman rolls off the roster.

Soto has definitely slowed down, but over past 10 he has hit .263/.378/.474. That is really solid production. If his age 20 complete season is that stat line I would be satisfied.

No, he'll never learn to play outfield.

He is back to hitting everything. That bat plays in left and eventually first.

That bat plays anywhere, but let's see what happens when the league adjusts again.

He seems athletic enough to play the OF, but very raw regarding routes and reading the ball off the bat. He should be able to learn. Then again, we said the same thing about Harper.

And let's remember he is 19 years old and is taking plenty of walks. He will improve, and it isn't like his success right now is due to teams underestimating his bat and giving him balls to hit.

If he keeps it up, he might win Rookie of the Year. Brian Anderson with the Marlins is hitting well and has been around since Opening Day, but he hasn't excelled like Soto.

He's winning rookie of the year if he keeps this up. He'll have 4-5 months of MVP-level hitting.

I'm not sure that's still Bryce Harper we're seeing in the outfield every night.  It looks like him...  and, like all of us I guess I just assumed it was him.

...Now I'm going to ask you all to stay open-minded about this, okay?  I too thought it was crazy (at first).  But the pieces of the puzzle fell in place for me, and the truth was revealed:

I've come to the conclusion that this is the only remaining way to explain Bryce Harper's 2018 season.

As good an explanation as any I have heard.

Robles hasn't proven that he can hit big league pitching.  We all hope that he will learn quickly (in time for a potential pennant run in 2019).

Is Carter Kieboom on track to be an impact player for the Nats in 2019?

Spencer Kieboom has been a pleasant surprise so far.  Again, a big question is whether he'll show enough offensive production to be the Nats' starting catcher in 2019.  Worst case scenario is that he's a capable backup.

Isn't Roidy Raudy Read supposed to be a better bet?

It's an open question whether Read's success has been due to PEDs.  Who knows what's to come of him?

Juan Soto plays left field like a 19 year old with a couple of years of pro experience.

Which is exactly what he is.  We have no idea if he'll be a decent outfielder or not since he's still learning how to play it.  His bat is a decade ahead of the rest of his game.  His defense is questionable and his base running is weak, because as a 19-year old, he's still learning those things.  If he was running and playing outfield like this at Hagerstown or Potomac - where he was a couple of months ago - he would look pretty average.

Robles hit .250 in a quick cup of coffee. Projects really well.

I am not selling my property on Robles Island. That is good real estate.

I agree and disagree. I think he clearly thinks about the game and will work to get better. But here's the list of guys 20 or under since 1980 who were the worst fielders in defensive runs (Fangraphs):

1. Justin Upton
2. Gary Sheffield
3. Aramis Ramirez
4. Sammy Sosa
5. Juan Soto

Here are the top 5:

1. Manny Machado
2. Andruw Jones
3. Ivan Rodriguez
4. Edgar Renteria
5. Elvis Andrus

The full list makes it pretty clear - even by 19/20 you usually are who you are on the defensive spectrum, and if you can change, you probably are going to get worse not better (Bryce was an above average fielder way back when).

But I am going to tentatively agree that he'll get better, much the same way Kyle Schwarber got better. There's so much you can do with training and nutrition and studying defensive positioning and routes these days, that if you're a true dedicated student of the game I think you can maximize your talent even with limitations. And I hope Juan does that. :)

and the very best of all of this is, is that there should be little desire (as there is no need) to waste any money on Harper...

Bryce was an above average fielder way back when

First thing I think of in terms of Bryce as a fielder "way back when" is him backpedaling like a girl in the 2012 allstar game and the ball dropping over his head.

If Soto hits like this, his men defenses is complete acceptable.

OF defense of Eaton in RF, Robles in CF, and Soto in LF would be fine. Shift them over and have Eaton and Robles cover more territory
